Hi All,

I am new here and have recently become a house (well a flat) owner. 

I am having difficult understand all the components within the electric meter cupboard.

I have photographs but I gather I could not post this until I reach certain level of postings in the forum.

I have identify one of the component within the meter cupboard is the Wylex 104 45 Amp Insulated Switched Fused Isolator.

I think it is in the off position (off showing), should I turn this on to the on position (with on showing)?

I have also meant to have a heatwise meter but the electric boiler (Electramate 2000) is not heating at the cheap rate, is this something to do with it?

So do you have just an electric boiler (and radiators) for heating?

What sort of electricity meter, single or dual rate?

if you want whatever its powering to work, then yes, switch it on. otherwise leave it off...

Hi there,

Yes it is the one as pictured.

It is meant to be dual rate (more than 4 wires in the bottom of the meter) and it says heatwise on the meter.

There has only been 1 unit in the cheaper rate and I have just been using the normal day rate for heating - which is not ideal, but I have been very frugal and averaged about 10-12 units per day, but obviously want it to run on the cheaper rate! When I called up NPower, they said the meter was changed just before I moved in...

The thing is I have no idea what it is powering, seems to have no effect whether on or off (I take that with the word "on" is on and "off" is off)?

Some further info.

The Wylex box has 2 grey wire connected to it, 1 goes to a black "CLICK - 100 A 250 V" box and 1 goes to a White Box (that says "Strip Length 25mm"). 4 wires then go to the meter from this White Box.

Is it down to your usage?

The WHOLE house gets the cheap rate at night.  So any usage of the boiler overnight would register at the off peak rate.

Now it the boiler controls are set so that it's only ever on during the daytime, then it will register at the peak rate.

Have a look at your electricity bill and tell us EXACTLY what tarrif you are on (e.g economy 7, economy 10, total control or something different)

Now I've just googled the Electramate 2000

It appears to be a thermal store boiler, which is a half sensible approach to electric heating.

you should have TWO sets of controls.  One set will determine the "charge" periods, i.e the times that the thermal store is being heated by it's three immersion heaters (9KW total heat input)  This programmer should be set to match the off peak times of your tariff. Ideally you want to be on the Economy 10 tariff as that has a mid day off peak period so the thermal store will be charged up ready for when you want the heating on in the evening.

The second set of controls will determine at what times heat is drawn out of the thermal store and circulated to the radiators.

Post some pictures of all the controls you can find.

I would turn this mystery switch fuse on.  Perhaps that is what feeds the boiler during the off peak periods. It won't have any immediate effect turning it on in the daytime, but turn it on, then get up in the middle of the night and go and have a look at your electricity meter, it should be flashing like a goodun if the boiler is charging up over night at the cheap rate.

Thanks ProDave - switched it on and no effect? 

I have a feeling the whole circuit in the flat has been wired incorrectly as the off-peak meter shouldn't be possible to have a non-moving (still have ventilation running 24-7 and phone chargers etc). Am I right in saying everything should be wired to off-peak as well?

I am definitely on economy 10 after calling NPower and also confirmed on the meter (says heatwise).

I'm wondering are you SURE it's economy 10?  Not something like "total control" which is an old tarrif no longer available to new customers, but it works VERY differently.

Hiya, I don't think they have total control where I live (Northampton), and can confirm with NPower I only have 1 meter...
