    Check your Ze reading if its too high (0.35 for a TN-C-S)(0.80 for a TN-S) You may have a bad earth from the supply which would push Zs values up!Check earthing conductor tightness! if still high inform DNO!     i never put smoke alarms on a seperate circuit reason being if the breaker goes no one notices they are off wont be long till the batteries go flat! Atleast if they are doubled up with a lighting circuit theres more chance of the breaker being put back on! :)

    Im pretty sure the manual tells you to put the neutral neutral on so the tester can verify supply polarity before it does the Ze test!
