    Shower switches

Oooh thats a particulaly bad un. Do see a lot of problems with showers. See burnt out shower switches all the time, usually an overrated shower has been fitted without rewiring by a plumber/bathroom fitter/tiler/builder. 9 times out of 10 the neutral insulation gives way causing numerous...

    Car Wash

I think the overtones are quite obvious really, I'm open to debate but I don't think judging the entire population of the eastern bloc, based on the standard of electrical installation in a local carwash, is quite fair. I agree, I see exactly the same at my local carboot sale when I go down, yet...

    Car Wash

Lots of small independant businesses of this nature run like this, it has nothing to do with where theyre from. Only last week, I received a call out from a small food distributors at 4am. They had had thier drivers make up thier own 16a extensions and botched it, blowing the main bullet in one...

    Wiring log cabin.

Recently did some work in a flat that had been taken back to brick, with plumbing pipework on show and all wiring in galv conduit. It was done as a feature and looked absoloutly fantastic.

    new pay rates?

I have also herd this being mentioned this week. I think this will cause all sorts of problems if implemented. On the job we are on at the moment, the main contractors are doing the chopping out. Unfortunately, they have let a labourer loose with a rotary stop drill and chisel bit and, as we...

Can you complete an EIC without been registered

You HAVE TO test and issue a cert. The relevant cert for the work that has been done. Read the OSG or BRB it isn't optional. Why do people seem to think that issuing a cert is somehow tied up with part p??? Testing and certifying has been in the regs long before part p was ever schemed up.

Failed D.E.I.P.I.R. (for a single dwelling)

Probably too much trouble to do it from underneath and form the tails into the terminals, why take an extra 5 mins to do it correctly???

    Testers

I used Meggar and Fluke at my last firm and when going self employed went for the Meggar. Much, much more user friendly IMO. In terms of zeroing leads, my Meggar has a function where you zero them and they stay that way until manually undone. Meggar aftersales are also really good.

Failed D.E.I.P.I.R. (for a single dwelling)

If the letting agents know the contractor then it wouldn't suprise me if they are trying to look after him. I know of agents who have 'taken a drink' out of the profits of jobs they've arranged. I do a lot of work around Leeds and have seen landlords of student houses and HMO's exploited...

    Broken testers??

Thanks for replies everyone, I have stocked up on batteries and all seems fine now. Turns out that on my mates tester his inline fuse had blown, which added to the general confusion, as we were both without user guides at the time. A copy of mine has now gone in the van permanently. Cheers.

    Broken testers??

Hi everyone, My mate and I are currently subbying on a decent sized site. Typical industrial unit with offices at the back. We've been brought on as testers and are currently carrying out dead testing. We both have Meggar MFT 1502/2 testers which, after 2 years of use have suddenly developed...

    Sunday morning callout

Doing a PIR about 5 years ago, I took the cover off the DB and there was a dead mouse still chewing on the live incoming tail. Someone once told me they can detect the buzzing and are attracted by it. Don't know if thats true though.

    Rated People.com

I know we've pretty much established how crap all these trade sites are but I had to post this one. For the sheer amount of work wanted I think its the worst I've heard of. Sent to me by a tiler/bathroom fitter who I do sparkying for (he is not posting the job, he has been sent the details by...

Simply, that if you are that way inclined it would be simple to ensure no tripping after installation. Two I recently came accross were a 4 way wylex CU installed in 2006. It had 8 individual circuits in it, all shoved in one way or another (including 4 x 2.5mm in one way) and no RCD at all...

Plenty of pre assembled dual RCD CU's have non RCD protected ways. ---------- Post Auto-Merged at 14:37 ---------- Previous post was made at 14:33 ---------- I used a CED one last week from toolstation. Dual RCD 12 way 5 + 5 + 2 non protected ways. I used a non protected way for the alarm spur.

+1 I wouldn't dream of testing before I had won the job. A visual of the property, inside of the board and main bonding is all I do. I don't think it is good business to carry out prior testing, if you find a fault before you've even got the job the customer is going to think you are milking it...
