I see on my ELECSA website there is a warning to take the 17 th before its too late in December. Presumably I will be de-registered if I fail.

I have some info from Aidan19 from a while ago but would like to hear from anyone who has done this , what was it like ,what sort of questions was it easy/hard etc

I was hoping to just take the exam but cannot find any books to mug up in other than the BRB and the OSG .

I'm pretty well peed off with it TBH as the last time I sat an exam was just after England won the World Cup, so I may be a little rusty to say the least.

As with others on here I am self employed , do everthing in the business from quoting ,typing it up , order the stuff, do the frigging job, test it, invoice it, pay the cheque in the bank, do the monthly tax returns, keep the accounts and certain duties for my disabled wife .

Next year I will have been in this trade as an Apprentice, Electrician, Approved Electrician, Foreman, Supervisor, Estimator, and now self employed for 50 years and these ******s want me to to go to night school or whatever just because the regs have changed. What a PITA this crap is FFS .

Anyway any advice would be gratefully recieved .

I have seen a course by the NICEIC for a mere

its looking like i may have to do 2382 aswell...

but....

if your obviously competent, would they want to loose you?

very very thin on the ground just to get the exam as the colleges that host the C&G siting are obviously wanting class room fees too.

you'll have to do the long course too

i was a little apprehensive of a class room at my age too but the class was mostly 40+ anyway

should get it for under 300 now

guys, I was bricking myself last year when I had to do it,

done my 2391 a good few years ago, so hadnt done an exam for a long time,

boy was I dumbfounded when I found out you are ALLOWED the BRB in the exam with you, and basically the OSG and I had a little UNITE guide with me as well,

some others had GN3 too.

it really has to be one of the easiest exams ever,

if you know how to use an index, and a contents page you will walk it.

its all about knowing where to look in the book(contents or index), and knowing the keyword you are looking for, eg, "current capacity" rather than "cable rating" sort of thing.

HTH,

ps, I think my 3day course and exam was about

when i done 2381 a while back, its was the same then. BRB/OSG etc allowed....

easy exam... the answer book is in front of you....

hopefully 17th will be the same

I concur with steps, I did a course over 3 weeks with 1 dat a week in the classroom, as an industrial guy it was really ggod to do the classwork but for someone like yourself it should be a piece of cake. Open book exam, 60 questions in 2 hrs. so 2 mins per question. I just hammered the ones I knew without the book, then went rhough the ones I needed to look up. I got 96% so was happy with that (and I'm no swot either)

I did mine last year 10 week evening classes and then multichoice exam at end of it, now if I can pass it there is hope for everybody.

deke, if you want sample questions there are some in the download section, if you cant find them pm me and i will mail them to you.

you can have the book in front of you, i think you are allowed it tabed up now, when i did mine your had to have a 'clean' copy.

it was 60 questions in 2 hrs but i think for a top up its 30 in 1 hr.

your be fine, hay if i got through it after a day's revision lol

It may seem a bit daunting but to be honest its not that bad an experiance.

I had to do the full 17th edition course as my 2381 was so long ago, I went to my Local college which ran a 3 day course with the exam on the 3rd day evening.

It cost

Thanks Paul, I'll have a look , will PM if I can't find them .

I quite enjoyed going back to school, generally from day to day I get my gear delivered as I don't have time to go to wholesalers so you don't really get chance to talk to others doing the same work as I do.

C&G Exam Success books may be of some help to you, start update course begining of june myself

Deke,

I do sympathise with your predicament I am told the 17th course is an open book so for a man of you caliber it should be easy , I have been told that even tho I am currently training C&G 2330 part 2 I will still have to take 17th exam once I am finished ! ! !

kidding thats scandulous

so is the 2330 course teaching 16th edition stuff headbang

top tip for the exam...... go through all questions befor you pick up the book, answer all the ones you know, flag the ones you think you know, and then go back through with the book, you will save a lot of time like this and if you dont get to answer a 1 or 2 your better answering ones you dont know than missing ones you do

as crazy as it is, 2381 is still a seperate course to an apprenticeship. iirc, the college arranged 2381 for everyone else, but not me since i already had it

The 2382 is a breeze for someone who has the underpinning knowledge of many years electrical experience like yourself Deke assuming that is that you can read ;)

When I left NICEIC to go to NAPIT they requested 2 things of me. 1, that I get my 2381 (I had 2380 at that time and was waiting for the 2382 before spending money going back to college)

2, Also that I take my 2391, which was something I was going to do anyway.

Anyway i was cheesed off because I had to go back to college to get 2381 then go straight back to do 2382. The upshot was that I only had to sit 30 multiple choice questions. It is true that you can take all your books in with you, but I have to say I reckon I still could have passed it without any books. I scored 29 out of the 30.

Bit of a joke really, that most scheme providers will let people in with that certificate alone. You know years ago it was never classed as a qualification, it was an update that only qualified electricians could sit. If you couldn't prove you were a spark you couldn't sit it.

Basically anyone that can read has a good chance of passing. With that said Deke I wouldn't worry, you'll be just fine, enjoy it.

Deke - agree with Voltimax mate.

I REALLY didn`t want to do a 3 or 5 day course - more for the time I`d lose from work than anything else. Found a local company - they may do or know of others?, who did exam only for

I looked at the downloads (thanks) but some of the questions seemed wrong to me ,which is worrying.

Ommission for circuit protection against overload may not be given to which of the following:-

Fire Alarms

Control circuits for fire extinguishinhg equipment

Exiter circuits for rotating machines

Supply circuit for lifting magnets.

I've never read about not having overload protection on any circuit although I have wired a pump to power a sprinkler system where the insurers told us to remove overload protection ie; HRC fuses and connect direct to the busbar system , we refused and told them to come and do it themselves as I could'nt find any reference to it.
