Hi all,

I am doing the second fix on a friends property while the spark is away and on his return he is going to fit consumer unit and check all my fixtures etc. In the bathroom ceiling one of the holes has 4 t&e and 1 3core hanging down waiting to be terminated, I understand 'loop in' method but am confused by this set up. If someone could explain that would be great.

I presume this is for a light fitting?

Twin & earth's:

One will be lighting supply feed in.

One will be lighting supply feed out (to next light fitting)

Once will be the drop to the switch.

The 4th may be another feed out. Perhaps to a shaver socket?

The 3 core & earth will be to the bathroom fan. That will be neutral, permanent live and switched live.

I dislike "loop at the light" and much prefer "loop at the switch" wiring. Whatever light fitting you choose, you have a LOT of wires to safely and correctly terminate. A lot easier to do in a switch back box (as long as it's a deep back box not a silly 16mm one)

I presume you have an agreement to do part of the second fix to keep the price down? Perhaps this particular light fitting you should leave for the sparks as there's a high probability of getting it wrong.

Has he not labelled any of the cables? I use a permanent marker to label what does what, so if there's some time between first fix and second fix, I don't have to rely on memory to work out what cable does what.

Thanks for the fast response gents. I think I will leave that alone and just do ring and all other lights. Great, at least I wasnt being a numpty and missing something obvious.

You say 'at one of the holes', are spotlights being fitted I'm the bathroom?

Could there be loops in and out, switch wire, ext fan, and switched feed on to next spot light?

Nobody knows the workings of an Electricians mind during 'first fix', it is one of a miriad of mysteries in the spectrum of a Sparks job.

When we qualify we are secretly taken into a darkened room and sworn to an Oath of secrecy [a bit like the medical profession do, but ours is more serious, as in their case their customers always die in the end]

Between me and thee [and don't tell anyone else FFS or I will have my snips broken over my head and be fenestrated]...always over engineer everything, make it look more complicated than it actually is; after all there are only really two wires in any circuit:_ the one that takes the electrickery in and the one that takes the electrickery out, with a few twiddly diversions inbetween.

Seriously though, leave it alone. It will save tears and unpleasantness in the long run.... :coat
