so you do understand the difference then,

a voltstick only detects an induced voltage, not a true voltage then,

would you agree with that?

all 'proper' voltage indicaters require the circuit to be made, even neons and 'dilogs' and their derivatives.

Im not meaning to be patronising[if that is how you see it]

but how I see it is a 'proper' voltage indicator should be able to show you where the voltage is, not merely that a voltage is present.

 
yeah my question was how does it do it?

if you connect a filament lamp across a ac supply it will indicate voltage, connected eitherway, a induced voltage would be picked up all along the filament and any connecting wires so with induced voltage indicator would indicate all along the circuit and therefore could not indicate at which side is the live.

i really cannot accept your dilog would indicate which side is live when connecting across a load.

what i'm saying is it will indicate live when the tester is used with 1 probe but not when connected across supply/load

???

yep, but a di-log [or similar] (even a neon) doesnt measure induced voltage, it measures actual voltage/potential, therefore it can determine on which pole/probe the voltage/potential is present.

why?

what theory is that?

basic principles of electricity will tell you that it flows in a direction,

detecting that direction is actually very simple,

put your finger on a N

no shock,

put your finger on a line,

bad day explode

simples, you have determined the direction of flow,

disclaimer,: do NOT actually do this.

 
just read your dilog manual it cannot tell you which is live when connected across a ac supply

sounds like the biggest fault you have here is one of two things

A your tester

B the tester

now, without being condescending,

considering you dont even know what a neon indicator is,

my guess would be B
