I am still in college doing my part time course in 2330 soon to be in level 2 on September this year, I am doing some simple installation in my house / members of the family and even to my friends , e.g , adding 1 way switch , adding outlets and some bathroom instalation ( lighting ) and floor heating ...

1. I am not a qualified yet

2. I am not doing apprenticeship ( only in the college )

but saying that , so far all the things that I installed were working ....

QUESTION: am I allowed to do such things like this during my early year in this trade? Am I gonna be in trouble ?

Have a nice day all .... and thank you

Anyone can work on an existing circuit inside the house so long as not in a special location. Your adding socket outlets or switches in a bedroom, lounge etc is ok. You can change like for like anywhere (inc SL, outside etc)

Any work in a SL is notifiable (bathroom) as is outside - so you should notify the local BCO - technically you are working illegally. Think of the consequence if there was a fault and their house burnt down and work done by non-qualified spark left their insurance invalid? It's one thing doing it in your own home.....

I love this type of question:p

Right lets get going, first thing lets decide which is notifiable and which is not.

Any alterations repairs to an exsisting circuit does not require notification.

Any work carried out on circuits to a bathroom or other special location will need to be notified unless the alterations are a one for one replacement, a repair to exising circuit which does not effect the characteristics of the circuit.

In conclution I would say that any work carried out should be done by a competant person, as you have asked on this forum for our views I would say you are a competant person, my reasoning for that assumption is many incompetant people never bother to ask for advise.

You still need the practical experience and the hands on 'doing'. Just chose very carefully what jobs you do and who you do them for.

Mess around with your own electrics - it's what I do :D

im in the same position as above, this has helped to clear up some worries thanks , what does this mean in the way of certification though? mwc ect?

cheers

providing your competent to do the work, have appropriate insurance in place (PLI) etc, and, if needed, notify LABC or become part P reg'd, then you can do anything

just because your training doesnt mean you cant do anything until your finished. i started my own company (+ part P scam reg'd) before i was a 3rd year apprentice. there were certain things as an apprentice i wasnt allowed to do on my own because i was an apprentice, but i managed perfectly fine with them on my own

just be safe, and dont take any work that you feel is above what you can do (unless you get someone else to take the job with you helping them)
