Another "speed Of Light" Question.

Stephen Hawking does a wonderful job in his famous book

on a brief history of time.  I realised, reading it, that Newton

was possibly the first person to understand that the universe

was expanding, because the universal theory of gravity AND

a "steady state" universe (as understood at the time) could 

not POSSIBLY co-exist.  Even in my books I had as a schoolboy

there were three theories about the nature of the universe.

1.  Steady State.

2.  Expanding.

3.  Pulsating (expansion followed by contraction).

The concept of infinity is a difficult one.

But then, if the universe does not go on forever, then exactly what is just beyond the "end" (beyond the "no ball games" sign)

It's a bit like the concept of time having no beginning and end.  If it did, then what happened before time started?

This was a point alluded to in one book I read many

years ago about Black Holes.

The author did not STATE that a Black Hole was a

starting point for a new universe but it was clear in

his reasoning that he was thinking along those lines.

Going back to dimming stars, nothing I have read or

heard seems to indicate that they are dimming.  It is

at this point that I go back to consider the great and

ancient texts like the Gilgamesh Epic, the Kalevala

and other world creation myths that sometimes tell

us the same thing in different ways.

But what is the speed of dark?

Presumably we are moving the opposite direction to some of the universe so we are moving apart at speed of light X 2 .  With everything being relative some of it is coming with us at the same speed so appears to be standing still .

The stuff that the new array (biggest in the world) of radio telescopes will be looking at is so far away , the images that reach us are from the past .  The stars may not even be there anymore .  So we are looking back in time .

Just ....moving my post up front as I didn't know where it came from.

But what is the speed of dark?

No one ever came up with that one before , Monkey  .   Is the Dark static in the universe , so the norm , so its still until light disturbs it ...............yes thats it ...........the Dark doesn't move.

Red shift again.....everything we look at in the universe

is receeding from us and all the rest is also receeding

because our galaxy is moving faster.

Think on the bright side;  life on earth would have been

fantastic to live and events in the sky would have been

absolutely wonderful to observe but you would need to

have a spacecraft handy when an ice bound comet

was coming in with water to fill the oceans with the

means to permit life to begin.

The skies are quieter now and there are mortgages to pay.

Erm............ us lot, (still) endlessly discussing the infinite complexities of the universe, and the relative speeds of light, dark, and the various shades inbetween
