Hi I'm currently at collage and really struggling to find an apprenticeship. What companies do you know that I could approach and send a cv with a covering letter to introduce my self too. Many thanks in advance and anything would be a great help. Please could you leave the company name followed by the type of work they cover and any contact details if you know of any.

Try the NICEIC website for list of local firms in your area, also look on yell.com and the phone directories send a CV to as many as you can, call potential employers ask for some work experience for free.

My advice would be to try and get in with a big contracting firm that can offer a wide variety of work to develop your skills.

Depending on your age JTL might be abel to offer some help and guidance used to be that if you passed there apittude test then your name got put onto the list and employers looking to recruit an apprentice would select names from the list to interview.

No I don't think so. A lot of these citb and jtl open you with welcome arms but it's down to the individual to find an apprenticeship they just seem to jump on your back because they get financed through the government. What they should be doing is searching for you as there quite happy to take money. Thanks though I will look into it.

Apprenticeships are not what they used to be, unfortunately successive governments have played down the importance of the apprentice. It is a known fact that the UK decided in the late 1970's early 1980's to move away from manufacturing as a mainstay of commerce and move in on the lucrative banking markets. If you look at all the countries around the world who still have a strong manufacturing base you will see that they are now doing better to recover than countries like ours.

I first started in electronics, and moved into electrical installation later because it looked hands on and interesting,at the time I had done almost two years at college, two phone calls later and I was on another course with a new employer. That would never happen in this day and age, it took about half an hour for me to change jobs, and course!

Today it would take a dedicated person months if not years to do the same.

Thanks manator. It is disheartening all I want to do is have a chance and learn its not about money it's because I'm passionate about it I find it extremely interesting and challenging but also rewarding. I just hope things pick up for all the trades so I might be in with a shout if getting an apprenticeship. :(

If you and people like you persevere and make it you will prove that you are better than I. I was brought up in a relative privileged time when work was plenty and training was afforded to those who asked. If I was in your shoes today would I be the person I am now? Or would I have given up and gone on the dole?

Go for it and try everything and everyone in your area, be polite, and punctual and prove you are a worthy candidate, you will do it if you are determined. I personally wish you good luck, and hope things do work out for you but it will be hard work.

When we had a company running we had two lads from the CITB scheme who did their time with us. The set up was that they claimed a percentage of everyones profits within construction, which we were not happy about so looked at what we would get out of it.

They would place an apprentice with you and pay their wages for 1st year then less for 2nd year and so on .

They were supposed to check on their progress but I don't remember them doing so.

Keep trying and never give up I know it's hard at times and feels like the whole world is against u I didnt get an apprenticeship untill 3 years after leaving school I did a extra year at college 1st year after school cos there were no apprenticeships going the second year I did a full time electrical course which was a 2 year course c&g 236 it was then and finally got my chance are you currently studying ?

At the time I rung companies from the yellow pages sent cvs and interviews work experience all with no joy keep trying something will come along

Are you a school leaver Gavin, or a mature student as they say?

Its sometimes difficult because no one says on here who and what they are exactly .

I can only say try to get all your courses done at college if you can even if you're not getting the practical experience .

Everything is upsidedown these days but it can't go on forever.

I'm currently in collage in south Wales Caerphilly I'm due to finish my course which I will gain city&guilds 2330 level 2. And then on for level 3. I already gained my NVQ level 2 and city&guilds 2351 level 3 but I took a job as a mate and they said at the time I could go back in the September to carry on and finish the other 4 units of the 2351 but when it did come to it they said no, so I thought well what do I do now doi finish this job to carry on or take a chance anyways they finished me as I didn't have a drivers license at that time now I do. I have some experience in house rewiring and some commercial also. I have been a welder for about 9yrs I come from an engineering background I have a lot of experience to bring to the table from other things I have done in technically minded. I won't give up and thank you for your input it means a lot.

Didnt think that C&G are still running the 2351 course ? thats what i did with JTL mind i alredy had the 2360 part 1 and units 1-4 of the 2351 and an NVQ level 2 plus the 2381 16th edition before i started with them.

I didnt get an apprenticeship when i left school so did the full time electrical course at a local college, as part of that course we did six weeks unpaid work experience to gain unit evedence for our NVQ level 2 award.

Just a thought why not try the highway lighting department of your local council they might be looking for an electrical apprentice.

Thanks street lighter I had an application through today for clarkson Evans contractors there based in Cheltenham but have various departments throughout the country luckily they have one in Newport near me so it's a glimmer of hope fingers crossed
