Purple is Cat6 for HDTV or Gigabit network

Some Purple Cat5e FTP which is the cbus network and cytech keypads

Yellow is Cat5e for speakers over Cat5

Grey is Cat5e for data, voice and visual points

White is 6 core for alarm

White is also 2 core 79 strand oxygen free for speakers

Pink is 16/2 speaker cable

Black is CT100 for freeview or satellite

I think that is it :)

so nobody wants to help me get started with data cabling? :_| :_| :_| :_| so unlike this forum! :coat :(
To be fair, repeatedly asking about it in a thread and hoping for someone to fill you in on the lot within a couple of hours is the wrong way to go about it. I learnt how to do it on my own, and I'm sure anyone can, including you. I'm not saying there's no help available, if you look into it and have specific questions then ask away, I can;t even begin to tell you everythign you need to know in a couple of paragraphs on a forum.

Where and what is the glued stuff then? It was pretty much all I used in NZ.
Dunno, can;t say as I've seen any glued stuff. Was it from different manufacturers or did you stick to one make? Could just be a manufacturer specific thing.

Play nice Lurch! You were doing so well........

No stupid questions on here, we try to help everyone here.

All I know is it was blue, I realise that 5e has different characteristics and different twist ratio. The guys I worked for in NZ said it was the glueing together of the pairs that made it better.

I started work with a company called Indeserve and they just gave me some cat5 and sent me out, I did eventually do a course and gor Krone Certified (dont know if thats relevant in UK?) I basically used my cabling skills and learned as I went. There are some things like keeping it away from mains cables, bunching, not stapling, and not stripping back too much or untwisting more than 1/2" from terminatiion that you need to remember.

Nice. What do you use for HDTV over Cat6? Is it some sort of HDMI extender?

That an interesting one? Do they also need Ethernet connectivity for the device or just power?
Both power & connectivity, basicaly they are wanting to create a mesh/matrix so personel with laptops can connect & update incident info to & from main cp in realtime.

I think the biggest issue will extenting the ethernet over 300m (assuming its not a fibre link). Most ethernet range extenders will require power so if you've got power for them you've got power to either power the device directly or inject power into the ethernet cable. Best bet is to distribute ethernet over fibre to a small POE capable access switch thats located within 100 metres of the laptop.

thank you apache

And thanks for the lecture Lurch. I take it you Joined this forum for the same reason as me - to learn from and share with others.

It was good of jdmjrmdam to post those links; which was all I was asking for - somewhere to start with data cables.

I did not expect anyone to spend hours on me; I was merely hoping for someone on the thread to acknowledge my, obviously inferior, presence.

I must say that I have been around this forum for quite some time now and this is the first time I have been put down for trying to ask questions

Well I'm clueless!So where do I start?

Where do I get a cash course?

I don't know how to terminate it?

Is the same as phone cables, (punch down tool)?

Got any pics anyone?
Idjuts guide as follows music....

Ingredients:

1 x Box of Cat5 or similar!

Cat5 is a 4TP (4 x twisted pairs) cable

Orange/Orange+White

Green/Green+White

Brown/Brown+White

some RJ45 outlets

Look close you can see the colours marked on the side of the outlet.

Face plate(s) for your RJ45 outlets:-

They fit onto standard single gang outlet boxes.. flush or surface.

A punch-down tool to secure the wires in the IDC connectors

(IDC) insulation displacement connector...

connections you just force home without any prior stripping back.

Some patch leads to connect your nice new RJ45 outlets and Cat5e cables on to the devices you want to connect:

you could have a go in you own home if you have a router with some RJ45's on the back of it?

This week I was asked to install a data outlet in a shop and hook up a new cable to the hub etc. The boss asked if I had done any of these before and handed me a bag of bits, punch down tool and a comms tester and it was a case of off you go.Thankfully I have done a fair bit of data and comms whikle in NZ but didnt want to admit too much in case I stuffed things up. Thankfully it all came back to me and everything worked fine.

anyone else ever do this kind of stuff?
Yes.....Blushing:)

but not much in me Caravan!!! :^O :^O:^O

Feel free to all take things the wrong way from time to time then ***** about amongst yourselves like a group of cackling old women.Hmmm.
Good Morning Lurch, I will remind you that on this forum we will not tolerate the sniping & antisocial attitude that is common place at other forums. I will also remind you that if you don't want things to be taken the wrong way I would suggest that, when other members, who are trying to learn, who have asked perfectly reasonable questions, you don't add an ambiguous, unhelpful of factually incorrect post likely to mislead, such as your post #24!?

To be fair, repeatedly asking about it in a thread and hoping for someone to fill you in on the lot within a couple of hours is the wrong way to go about it. I learnt how to do it on my own, and I'm sure anyone can, including you. I'm not saying there's no help available, if you look into it and have specific questions then ask away, I can;t even begin to tell you everythign you need to know in a couple of paragraphs on a forum.
You opening point is totally incorrect for the following reasons

  • Musicspark asked three times see posts #10, #12, #16, which all appear reasonable questions?
  • If you don't ask you don't learn.
  • This forum always encourages people to ask about things they don't understand.
  • There are no stupid, daft, or silly questions questions.
  • If a thread gets to much off topic or off on a dual subject.. "we can move posts".. although they are often best kept in place to retain the context of the thread.
  • In this case the posts are all still relating to persons doing data cabling.

You closing point would also appear to be incorrect as, other members have provided links or general guidance that Musicspark was requesting. So if you are unable to offer helpful or constructive advice because something is outside of your ability scope, then it would be best to 'not post', rather than complain to someone else for asking a good question, then saying you will not answer it.

Everyones input to the forum is valued and important, those with knowledge and experience AND those with a desire to learn that knowledge. Could you please use your knowledge and experience in a constructive manner Lurch, Thank you. This forum is well mannered helpful and friendly, which is a credit to all of the members who contribute. We don't do '***** about amongst yourselves like a group of cackling old women'. Obviously, Admin or the other Mods will correct any inaccuracies in this post.

Doc H.

(apologies to revjames for taking up some of his thread)

i would apologise for the put down you had .

i am hopeful that such a reply will not be posted to you or any other member in the future .

that is not the way this forum was designed to work .

there is not much to add to doc h post above .

lurch please try to keep negative posts in your head rather than on the forum

this may save further bitching

as you put it
