Sorry for all the fuss guys, but I must say, I did get some superb help from some of my fellow members.

No hard feelings, Lurch (hope we can still talk)?Blushing

Blimey, dragging this one out. Didn't realise everyone was so sensitive.

I never said anything with any intention to offend anyone.

i would apologise for the put down you had .

i am hopeful that such a reply will not be posted to you or any other member in the future .

that is not the way this forum was designed to work .

there is not much to add to doc h post above .

lurch please try to keep negative posts in your head rather than on the forum

this may save further bitching

as you put it

Agreed.

Well, Now you do Lurch. Please calm it down.

This forum was set up in order to get decent answers to any question without being B*tched at or Ridiculed etc.

There is also no such thing as a "Stupid" question on here (As mentioned in a post above).

And it IS a Help and Talk Forum.

That was why it was originally set up to be AND will continue to be.

I couldn't care less what goes on on other forums. This one is my concern. This forum has taken a heck of a lot to build up and continue to build, and the fantastic Members here had a huge part in that too.

I will NOT have it go like the other forums on the net!

Any Carp, BullCarp or B*tching can stay on the forums!

Regards,

Admin.

PS. As our Moderator has mentioned above - We will leave the posts in place to keep the context of the thread in tact.

It will serve as a "Caution" to others that maybe new to this forum too.

I never said anything with any intention to offend anyone.
Glad to hear that. But please choose careful wording. You are clearly intelligent and can be a great benefit to others here too.

I remember a certain member on here, similar - but not the same - Who came across as everything But what he/she is - after carefully choosing his/her words - he/she is now a Hugely respected Member.

Hey Lurch, no hard feelings!

I just wanted some info which was graciously provided.

PS I'm not stupid, I got distinctions for all My GOLA Exams and 100% for seven of them. And where possible I will offer advice when I can.

However, I realize that there is no substitute for experience, and that there people on this forum who have a wealth of it.

Nobody would give someone my age an apprenticeship so I have had to get work as a mate and pay fo my own C&G quals

This was both expensive and difficult for me.

this Forum is a terrific resource for people like me, so please folks keep that help coming and lets all stay positive!

I assume your not looking at fibre yet... plain ol' copper wire?

And cat5e is by far the most common so I would start with that..

As mentioned above, get yourself a idc punchdown tool. Amazon has a decent enough draper one for under a fiver. It does the job amply.

A decent rj45 crimp tool would be a bonus... and a basic lan tester

Get the more specialised (and expensive) tools after you have a bit of experience.

The rest is mainly standard electrician's tools.

Personally I'm not a fan of keystone terms, I much prefer modular ones. Your mileage may vary (I'd advise get a couple of each and give them both a try).

I'll happily give you a cash course *grin* you will be wiring up a college while I sit down. watch and offer advise and encouragement. You just have to pay your hotel bills, feed yourself and obviously do the work. How about it?
