got a shark 100 quad bike to fix. starter motor turns it over, there is a spark and there is fuel, but it just wont start. taken carb apart, tried easy start and still nothing. any ideas?

well i assume it did work at some stage of its life

my dad bought it on ebay a few month ago - was advertised as not working, but he thought it would be an easy fix. (just like a (not working) van he bought on ebay that had to be collected from newport a few years ago)

is 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
2 stroke. separate tank for the oil

Id suggest a ring has gone or a piston meltdown. As Noz has suggested see if theres any compression. If its liquid cooled, drain the coolant and pop the head off, if there is no damage there then barrel off and have a look at the bore and piston/rings for damage.

**edit** actually before all that, a mate had a chinese built quad that he could not start a few years back, basically the choke was designed in such a way that it was open nearly all of te time, and the motor just flooded unless you physicvally held it closed

seems to have compression.

i think the problem might be the spark at the wrong time. or could be as sprocket says and just flooding straight away. ill have another go at it later and see if it will start

may be stating the obvious here,

but is it fresh petrol?,

they cant really go off timing unless the flywheel has sheared the key on the crank.

if its flooding straight away the plug will be really wet,

take the plug out and try turning it over with your thumb over the plug hole, you will be able to feel the compression(it wont be much in that little engine),

that way you will feel if its getting fuel too,

if its been sitting a while could be crank seals dozed and oil getting into big end, or sucking air in from the other side,

remember 2strokes compress below the piston as well as above.

fresh petrol, drained all the old fuel just incase it was that

plug is wet pretty much immediately

you can feel compression with plug removed and thumb over hole

it has been sitting a while - tried for a few days few month ago, been sitting in the corner of unit since then until the other day

i was thinking the same about the timing - it cannot be attached to shaft in the wrong place

could have sheared the key though,

whip the cover off and have a quick look, chances are if it has moved it will be by quite a bit and will be obvious.

have you tried it without an air filter?

not much can go wrong with single cylinder strokers TBH,

fuel air spark, suck squeeze bang blow,

have you tried a new plug? sometimes under compression they can break down,

just a thought, is it the right length?

I'll have a check now to see whats meant to be in that,

what model is it? Ive got an NGK cross reference book here.
