Just read an article in The Professional Electrician saying over 97000 people signed up for courses as electricians . I take these to be the private and day release college courses and not bona fide apprenticeships with a company or an electrician .

The news is welcomed by Napit , no doubt because these are domestic training schemes and 97000 guys will be looking to join a scam,..sorry scheme in due course.

Napit also says...... " there is constant pressure on youngsters to go to university when they could choose an exiting and rewarding career".... as a sparks.

Well I 'aint banked any money for 5 weeks , rewarding ..Eh !!

(And since when where would be sparkies linked with university entrants, if you had the quallies for uni, you wouldn't be looking at being a sparks would you.) Electrical engineering yes .

I didn't know there was a shortage of sparks ...thought there were too many TBH. Well there will be 97000 more shortly ...all chasing the same non existant work as the rest of us .

I can see the "Pee" schemes moulding perhaps two bodies in the end ,as their fortunes and powers grow, NICEIC and ECA will pick the others off .

Unless this government kicks Part P into touch along with HIPS and the rest of the carp we have to put up with .

Any opinions welcome ??

Oh look !! Its 3.30 in the afternoon and I'm on the Forum, how come you ask, well just been round to a job and there are 97000 newly trained sparks queueing up to start it .

I'm inclined to agree with your comments but I think the damage has already been done with Part P. Central government have realised there is a hell of a lot of money to be made out of the current competent person schemes.

Government advertising and marketing have sold many people a dream of an occupation that is hassle free with the financial rewards of that of a white collar worker.

If you really think it's about improving electrical safety and standards within the home then I'm afraid your wrong.

Free fasttrack training=more diluted electricians=more money from P Schemes from diluted electricians joining= MORE MONEY FOR CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

Yes 97,000 qualified electricians joining P schemes @ approx

I disagree with the grades comment, I had the grades to go to uni, but going through sixth form bored out of my brains behind a desk made me realise that I don't ever want a desk job. I'm now earning nearly twice the money of my friends that all went to uni. University is over-rated, the chances of coming out with the job you wanted at the end of it are getting slimmer and slimmer.

+1

Same here. Was bored shi++less doing my A-levels so decided against uni.

Far too old to have had the chance to go to uni after school. left at 15! Did do a degree at 44 tho' really enjoyed it. Evenings only so it took 5 years, learnt loads made good friends paid for it myself. It just shows employers I can learn and am hardworking etc. It isnt all about getting the job of your dreams after leaving uni you still have to work at it.

There are too many of us sparks whatever the grade, as I'v got older I have found it hard work anyhow, dont see many 90 year old healthy sparks but do work in plenty of professional peoples house of that age. They also have a better pension.

I'm getting out at the end of the month so good luck next year sadly I think its going to be hard.

If Uni isn't what it's all knocked up to be why is it I have just seen a job advertised with the NII section of the HSE starting at

Don't be too despondent. The article said 97000 courses applied for. That will include all those people doing 17th edition and upgrades, 2377, 2391 etc.etc. It's not 97000 new people. Of course having said that it will be a helluva lot!

If its not private , Tooold , what will you be doing? It does get harder as you get older , I can afirm that. Also been in the trade since I was 15.
No not personal, service engineer its not a bad job worked for them before but got laid off. They have sold a shed load of machines so work is fairly certain. Holiday pay, sick pay, clothes, tools, bupa, bonus, car, work from home, 4 day week the norm (45 hours so less than now!) late 20k salary going up when more training done. Just couldnt turn it down. some nights away is only draw back but travel inn/lodge standard with breakfast dinner and lunch allowance so not so bad.
