Andy 1st job for local builder don`t want to scare him off he says he has got work on till end of year and he is sh-t scared of touching electrics so need to keep him onside.
Thoughts on costs:-

1. Ignore what "other possible work" there is..... there is NO guarantee you will get it anyway.

2.Go in with a proper realistic full price at the start... so if you don't get any additional work you have at least made some money for yourself.

3. If you go in too cheap it becomes very hard to increase charges later, cuz builder is now expecting low hourly rates!

4. Your No.1 priority is keeping your business running at a profit... not being a charity doing cheap work for others.

5. Remember to think of ALL of your overhead costs, make sure you are covering them adequately.

And you may as well work down Tescos and at least you will get paid.
with no come backs, hidden problems, planning, sorceing materials, initial cost, just turn up put your fruit out and go home paid and forget about your day

Why is the builder "scared of electrics"? Because they are a "specialization"

We forget that, `cos we`re round leccy all the time.

You`ve spent a lot of time & money getting quals, part P reg`d, etc....

SOMEONE has to pay for that..

Plus you`ve got business start-up cost - can be more than you`d think.......

There may come a time when you need extra hands on a job; but if you`ve been going round uber-cheap, taking work from established firms, they`ll not be in a hurry to help you.

SL makes some very good points in his post - you have to set your rate at the start. You can increase it (slowly) year on year, but if you find you started to low, you won`t be going in 12 months time !!!!!

There is a "business start-up page" - worth having a look at, IMO.

Hidden costs are a stumbling block for many start-up businesses, not just electrical. If you watch Dragons Den, you often see people with great ideas and visions for their business, but they miss out some essential business costs which are soon identified by the Dragons.
