Hi guys

I'm wondering if you can help me? I am trying to become self employed however to start the job I need a utr number. So I went to register and they said I can't register unless I'm already in employment????

I'm stuck !!! Where do I go from here ???

Hi Danni,

To be honest go back to where they gave you that advice as they obviously misunderstood what you are trying to do.

The Government Gateway service are very good I have found.

All the answers are on that site somewhere but it is big and needs working on.

+1 you need to register with government gateway which I think is good too. It will take a few weeks minimum but you can get your utr number from them once your account is set up. Good luck mate

I went to my local tax office and they had an in house phone which I used, i told them I was going self employed, they were very helpful and gave me some advice on NI contributions and basically asked me to name a date I wanted to become self employed, they explained the UTR system and i think 2 weeks later I received it

Almost 75% of my work uses CIS

quick question...

are you in work at the moment or on any benefits ?

You don't have to physically actually have work on an order book to tell the Tax Office you are self employed...

You just tell them a Date you are going to call your start date!

BUT if you are receiving any benifits..

this may also be the date when some / or all of them STOP!

so you need to think about any income or financial commitments you have got to be paying before you actually get money coming in!

You don't actually have to tell them BEFORE you start self employed. You have something like 3 months from the time you start, to inform them that you are self employed.

Of course if you are on benefits, then you need to tell them as soon as you start work, but not when you start looking for work.

As far as I know , the reduced NI contribution ensures your state pension , income tax supports the Health Service and all the freeloaders and would-be terrorists on our benefit system , but don't waste your time signing on when the work finally dries up.
