ok, so this is what I have

ww.classictruss.com/art/truss_configurations_terms_defined.gif

and, it does appear to be a truss, as also called by Kerching,

#maybe its yet again one of those things where something is called something in the North,

and called the wrong thing in the south, because  they are too thick to know any better,  ;)   :C
So you are just boarding out the middle bit between the "web"s, makes sense if no head height.

Don't forget surgical truss when lifting boards

According to the bible that is Wikipedia you can have a roof that has a truss at either end that supports the purlins..

I've never seen it done this way before though... I'm more used to ceiling joists, purlins and rafters or pre-fab trusses

yes, Ive got about 6' usable width between the 'webs' , gives me about 5' something height if I have a 270mm raised floor,

any more advice about bracing I should know?

Assuming you will install the insulation on the sides as well, it wlll be uncovered rockwool, you might get glass fibre dust in the stuff you store up there.

I am sorry but I am gonna say it.

It it is boarding a loft. Boarding a loft!  Screwing boards to pieces of wood.

Have you you got a copy of the latest building regs book?

have you got the correct equipment to ensure it is safe to use?

DIY loft boarding is legal yes. But is it ethical?

Have you you got a copy of the latest building regs book? actually, yes, but, can I understand it,?   :C

have you got the correct equipment to ensure it is safe to use?  loading scales, I have borrowed a set, do I know how to use them,?  :C

DIY loft boarding is legal yes. But is it ethical?  do i need legal representation before answering this?

its fine, Im just doing what everyone else does,

Im gonna wing it and hope nobody tells the loft polis about me,  ;)

thats her problem,  :slap

did actually think about that,

was thinking maybe staple a cotton dust sheet along the upright angles, should stop most of the dust, but still allow enough airflow to circulate,

as said before, nothing critical, general tat, if it gets dusty or dirty, nothing lost, really only for stuff that being in the shed would be a bad idea,

I sense that we are trying to over engineer this. :C

let's start from the beginning,

What are you planning on doing in this loft?

is it going to be excessive- weight or movement?

Realistically some 8"x2" timbers, cross screwed to existing timbers (argue amongst yourselves what you want to call them) at 90 degrees to existing. Then take boards again 18 or 20mm thick and fix to the top of the 8"x2".

Show aggi who will be well pleased then she'll hand you your bedding and leave you in peace  :slap

might be chilly up there at night, best to throw in some power for a heater too, cable rated accordingly of course...

FWIW when I did our loft I fitted 22mm boards down the middle section, on top of the joists & 4 inch insulation, allowing space of about 2 inches either side should I need to move any, then put 10 inches of insulation where there isn't any boarding.

My rational is that the boarding will act, to some extent as an insulator and I didn't want to faff around with the stilts!

All sorted, I'll post some pix, for the sad people that want pix of me boarding my loft,

Or just me getting off on doing something half right for a change, :)
