my boiler has tripped the fuse box switch in garage and when i try and flick it back it sparks a little and wont let me do it.. i dont know how long ago it tripped as boiler is only used in winter.. do i need a electrition or a heating engineer .. any advice welcome... thanks

Do you know what system you have, is it a combi, system boiler, standard boiler with water cylinder and wet rads etc, 3-Way diverter or 2 1-way for heating and hot water.

Plumbers normally ask electrician to tell them which part is the issue before they change it although electricians will do it all.

its a ideal classic wall mounted, fanned, balanced flue gas boiler
As Deke said, a heating engineer will be able to fault find and replace failed part, and I bet it's either pump or diverter valve, small chance it could be gas valve but doubt it.

I have known a pump that's been off all summer seize up then throw mcb, unscrew little plate in centre of pump and see if it turns freely with a screwdriver, if its a new type of pump with small plug, un-plug it and see if you can power up, if not best let the heating guy take a look.

thanks for ya help.. gonna get a heating engineer in to have a look first and get a few quotes for new boiler.. 15 years old.. main cercern that is safe .. but again thanks for all the advice...

main concern is sparking fuse box..

Well from experience i think an electrician should be your first call. As an example this week i have had 2 such call outs after the plumbers had changed the pump, valve, stat & programmer. They havent got a clue so throw part after part at the problem. An electrician will test section to find the faulty part. On my two jobs both had cable faults, one was burnt behind the flue & the other job a pvc/pvc cable was buried under the patio had a 95% short live to earth. But as normal the plumber had changed & charged for every part in the system except the boiler. The electrician may be able to change the part himself or you might have to call a plumber in.
