Seen a first fix of a job today where an electrician has completed a domestic first fix and instead of lifting the boards in the bedroom above, he has routed the cables in the corners between wall and ceilings and then dropped down to relevant points around the room.

The walls are going to be dot and dabbed afterwards.

Is this permissable?

Within safe zones assuming within 150mm from finished corner.

Don't see why not. It is within the "safe zones"

I was slightly unsure about this even though I have got the diagrams for permitted cable routes, but was not 100% sure on taking cables around the room at ceiling height before dropping them down the wall.

So thanks fr the clarification on this.

I cant imagine how much of a pain in the @rse that would have been, unless of course the floor and ceiling was concrete.

done it recently to get past an RSJ

i only do it in extreme cases...

i dont trust homeowners remembering where cables are or safe zones

but as everybody confirms it is aloud in the regs

like when tacking back coving with nails

I certainly hope so, as I do it too!

Customers never plan the job fully, even when doing up a full house, so I have done a number of jobs where downstairs has a solid floor and the customer completes upstairs first and lifting boards is not an option. As such, the only way to do this is to follow the safe zones - after all, that's what they are there for! It's a lot more chasing though :(

(Although I did cringe on Tuesday when I saw that the previous sparks had run the cables for the cooker and at least one of the ring mains behind the skirting!)
