Hi All, just wonder if anyone out there can shed some light on this for me. My ex-employer who I now work for as a sub-contractor are a manufacturer of exhibition stands. They currently work on the basis that when manufacturing stand the wiring and electrics that are built into the units by staff with no electrical qualifications or knowhow. The only test carried out on the equipment is a live test in the factory, i.e. plugging it in to see if it works. These units are then sent out to customers for use

does the wiring need to be tested and approved by a electrician before sending out ??

ALL wiring wherever it is installed needs to be tested to confirm it complies with current regulations..

and is SAFE!

In your case That would also include section 711 of the wiring regs.

Exhibition, shows & stands.

Are you familiar with the current wiring regs, BS7671?

If you got a copy have a read through 711

starting on page 197 to page 199...

See if any bits relate to the type of stands you work on?

Then maybe narrow down any areas you think are dodgy..?

thanks i will have a look .

i have just started a s&g 2330 l2 course and i have been working at this company and the staff said to me if they are ok to be wiring downlighters and leads for lights ?

Specs to the rescue again.

I don't have 711 to hand just now, but I'd have thought that the manufacturer should be carrying out earth continuity tests and IR tests as a minimum prior to live functional testing.

As for line operatives wiring it up, i see no problem as long as the Manufacturing Engineers have done their jobs properly and they have Process FMEA in place and adequate 'Standard Operation Sheets' at lineside. The operators should be fully trained in their 'Standard Operations'.

There should be adequate testing at the 'End Of Line' to identify any (unsafe) failures and send to the rectification area.

I dont know the specific electrical regs,

but Im sure it would also come under the general "fit for purpose" banner,

which in this case would presume relevant electrical safety tests carried out.

Are these stands that are just plugged in when they get to the exhibitions?

If so, surely they just need PA Testing?

NO. As specs says, they come under 711. We nearly had a contract with a company who manufactured them, 3 years ago. Got undercutted somewhat :( :( But had looked into the necessary requirements quite a bit, at the time.
