I have been offerd work on the basis I can give periodic inspection certs. I have a good working knowledge of inspecting domestic installations, about 6 years worth, which I used to do for my old company. the supervisor would always check and then sign them after me. I have the 17th edition and 2351 certs. I want to do the 2391 course but need funds to do it, so can i just buy certs from the wholesalers in the mean time.

thanks.

Hello Tobo...

Guidance note 3 page 14, paragraph 1.2

"Required competence"

the inspector carrying out the inspection and testing of any electrical installation must as appropriate to his or her function have sound knowledge and experience relevant to the nature of the installation being inspected and tested...etc..

etc..
so..

simple answer if you are confident you meet those criteria then yes you can... Legally there is nothing stopping you doing it...

BUT:-

some customers, businesses, insurance companies may not accept your certificate without 2391 and/or membership of one of the contractor schemes..

YOU also need to consider you own personal legal standing in the event of a claim against you for advice given..

e.g. you say something is satisfactory then 2 months later Mrs Jones has an injury or property is damaged due to an electrical faulty?

so you may need some Professional indemnity insurance....

and PI insurance provider may expect you to have 2391.. (industry recognised course for Insp & Test)..

So in summary yes you can...

But could be a few potential pot-holes to fall into if the brown stuff starts flying!?

Also - All types of certs are in our download section.

100% with SpecLoc.

If you think you have adequate knowledge & experience to carry out the works; AND your insurance is happy for you to do so; AND the 3rd parth requesting the works are happy with "generic" forms", then yes.

Otherwise - I`d say no.

2391 isn`t a magic "how to PIR exam" - I know a couple of people who`ve "passed" 2391, yet I don`t trust `em to do a PIR on my garage wiring!

I do know a lad who does some occasional work for us; doesn`t have 2391, but is competent to carry out the work.

Hope you know what I`m getting at, cos I`m having a good conversation with Mr. Artois at the mo; following some rather strong muscle relaxant tablets earlier......... sorry

thanks guys. Napit will let me register with them as long as i can pass an initial assessment , which I'm confident i could do, but then i would have to get the 2391 within 18 months. I'm waiting for a reply off Elecsa to see what there requirements are. was going to look at Nic but I know a few people who have switched to the other 2 as they tell me they are less hassle and better service.
