If I was to use say a college bod (freind of the family) who wants to learn & I felt I should pay him a few quid for doing a few hours on the odd Saturday morning, how much cash/cheque could be paid;

  • Before he needs to pay any tax on it.
  • I need to register him as an employee.

However, in reality, a certain amount IS "written out" (though it tends to get classified as miscellaneous.)

For instance - you`re fitting a bathroom fan, and need a roof vent fitting. So you bring in "your" roofer to fit the vent for you; pay him cash, and charge the customer for his work - or, as you said, take an extra bod on a job where necessary.

We have taken the track of keeping this amount as low as possible - say less than

Forgot to post on this yesterday after the bean counter had visited.

As KME (& others) said there is no longer any such thing as "casual labour" where by you pay a small amount of cash for another persons time.

As per KME's post some cash can be lost as "misc.payments" but the more you put through the more likely it'll be scrutinised by hmrc.

The safe way is use your mate for the work get him to issue invoice as this puts any tax implications to him & dont use him more than once a week or (as KME has done) for more than
