Don't remember the Americans getting as much stick when they shot down the Iranian airliner which was I believe in Iranian airspace in the the eighties.......200 odd dead then. Think they said the commander of the ship made a mistake. They said sorry though! These people seem to have short memories when it suits.
Piece in The Times yesterday that the system used should have been operating two radars but that possibly the ID one was missing. Secondly that they meant to hit a Ukranian transport plane flying nearby but the "system" took over and hit the 777. I also think the Ukranians had suggested to the airline companies to fly above 32000ft. Some companies were avoiding the route altogether but others still using it to save fuel. Small comfort when these missile systems are good for 70000ft.Whilst I am not decrying the things that have gone on in the past, nor am I supporting them.
Technology and expectations move on.
In the same way it seems celebs thought it seemed to be OK to "kiddie fiddle" in the past, whist that was never acceptable in my, or many others eyes, the same as "drink driving" was OK, the same as using a mobile hand held whist driving used to be OK.
Expectations and what is considered acceptable change, and in this day and age, there is no excuse for shooting down a civilian airliner.
The ID beacon would have identified it as a civilian plane.
This was not apparently a hand held SAM, it was a vehicle mounted probably computer controlled launcher, which I suspect was capable of reading the planes beacon, so...
