Hi all,

I just moved into my first flat. It's pretty run down. The water heating is provided by a Newlec Economy 7 system.

The control panel has a rotating time dial which I have set to the right time. It also has a 'Boost' knob.

My problem is that when I just leave the water heating to come on on a timer, nothing happens. I know that it's supposed to come on between 23:00 and 7:00 but it doesn't even do that. The only way I'm able to get hot water is by using the 'Boost' button.

I have taken off the front panel and can't find any obvious reset button. Any idea what might be causing my problem?!

Thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer!

James

I have had to replace the relays in Economy 7 timers before, can't remember if it was a Newlec or not. Hopefully someone else will have ideas as well.

Cheers Steve

I'd have said if it was the relays then the boost wouldn't work either.

Is the timer actually turning and keeping the correct time?

my neighbour had a problem with his timer, he phoned them and they advised that only they could replace the timer, to be fair they came out within 24 hrs and replaced, but, they also had a policy that when a economy 7 timer is replace you go onto a new tarrif (he now pays 20p per unit normal rate and 4 on his storage heaters)

I think you're getting timers confused. The OP is on about an immersion heater time from the wholesalers, Newey & Eyre. I think you're on about the timer for E7 in the meter cupboard, which only the DNO can replace.

Could it be a dudd immersion heater.

It's quite common to have 2 immersion heaters. At night the off peak heats the bottom one, heating a full tank at the cheap rate. The boost just heats the top one giving half a tank at peak rate.

Of course most of these controllers can be wired to work with just 1 immersion heater.

How many heaters are in your tank?

Wow - thanks for all your advice chaps.

I don't know how many heaters are in my tank. It seems as though I'll probably have to call somebody out to take a look.

Do you know who I should call to get it sorted out? Or recommend anyone good in SE London?

Cheers

You should be able to see how many are in the tank as they're usually visible from the outside, and on the end of the flex running from the timer. You're looking for a 3" round black or silver can on the side or top of the tank.
