Just finished off the wiring for a boiler and when testing the RCD I found that whilst all the readings are within limits, the switch does not drop; you have to pull the switch down before you can reset it...

Now I know that Crabtree (Starbreaker) RCD's are not mean't to operate like this (unlike some older Square D)...

So is this a fail or just a comment on the EIC!!

Trying to remember what the last Crabtree board did when I tested...

but can't remember. :_|

I am going to a Job on Thursday with a Starbreaker so I could check what mine does ..

What happens with the test button?

I know for a fact that the switch should drop... I have fitted plenty of these boards in the past.....

All readings are within limits

1/2, 1x, 5x, ramp & manual (at 0 and 180 deg)

So the question remains,,, is it a fail or a note on the cert??

I have a Crabtree 60A split load RCD in my own CU, this does drop, so I'd imagine they all should

Although this one operates and disconnects, it would appear to be mechanically defective. I know the quarterly mechanical test is designed to lube the switch as much as prove disconnection, could this be the issue?, perhaps the switch has never been tested, and lacks lubricant in the switch parts

I guess the real issue is should it trip, the householder would see no obvious sign on the board to reset the switch, IMHO I'd advise replacement if practical

Have worked on some RCD's can't remember the name but when the RCD trips you have to reset it first by switching it to the off position before it will latch in the on position again, similar thing with MCCB's.
