Go and get a new Power supply.
What it sounds like especially with it working with the boards removed is overheat.
The main air blows through the power supply.
If your posh then teh PC may have secondary fans.
Take the hoover and clean all the dust of the fan intakes and filters especially around the CPU cooling fan.
I would recommend this for everyone once in a while.
Even the powerful graphic boards with cooling fans get clogged up with household dust and stuff.
You'll be amazed and how many computers crash or switch off due to overheating in turn caused by the build up debris.
My best experience of this was a friends Laptop only worked for 3 months then stopped. Took the hover to the rear filter and hey presto fixed. Also told her to stop lying on the floor working with it, its not too efficient at operating as a hover!
