I'm new to the forum and look forward to any hints of tips people can give me on the subject of my Dimplex night storage heaters.

Recently I removed the front panel and bricks in order to install a new wood flooring. I put the heater back together as I found it however the screw in the bottom left hand corner will now not fit so the heater is slightly open at the bottom.

I have been testing the heater on different settings however I always put the output to 0 as I am usually at home later on in the day when I believe I can increase the output to release heat.

However the heater always seems very hot in the morning then just loses heat throughout the day and when I turn the output up it seems to make no difference.

Could it be the little gap at the bottom is causing this problem?

Or could it be the output flap is wedged open so it is just releasing heat constantly?

This is a 2.5kw heater and it is using around 1.5-2kw of energy per evening turned up to 5-6 input. It is hard to say exactly how much is being used as I also have my gledhill water heater on at night on the economy 7 electricity.

Should I take it apart again and if so what should I be looking for?

Any help much appreciated.

I have storage heaters too. The settings make very little difference in my experience. By their nature they are hottest in the morning and will lose heat as the day goes on, however you set the dial. That's a cooling gradient for you.

Life with storage heaters..........

hot in the morning..... thats the idea! .seriously I used to install these all the time and the biggest problem is poorly insulated rooms. The only type of house they worke efficiently is well insulated modern ones that have no draughts! But also making sure you put it back together right will help too!

Hi the "output control" only controls a flap which if working properly stops the heat escaping as quickley when on a low setting.

Check that it is not jammed open, and refit cover properley

Storage heaters are brilliant if

A) you know how cold it is going to be the following day

B) if you have nothing else

IMHO They are as efficient as a Banker.............unless you have F good insulation, really really F good insulation

FFS its 2012 and we are warming up bricks, sticking them in a tin box and then letting the heat out of a flipping letterbox!

Do I like them?............Is Mr Huhne a careful driver??

Freaking MPs what a bunch of bent 'pancake flippers'

The voice of reason is now quiet, rant finishes.............. :coat

you can usually see the flap inside without removing the cover. check its moving up / down as it should. if not, needs a new control, or may be possible to bend the spring a little

Fix that gap, that will let air in and convect more easily and let the heat out.

When the front is off, the case is a bit like a load of jelly and free to flex. Putting the front on with it's dozen or so screws pulls it all back together and makes it rigid again.

If it won't close up, you probably have one or more of the bricks out of position. Turn it off for a night to let it cool down then take the front off again. Make sure all the bricks are pushed tight together, and you should be able to get the front on properly with no gaps.
