I live above a pub and electric shower hasn't worked for a few months, landlady just asked me to look at it, told her i'm still studying so wasn't competent. Had a look at sub-distribution board, found the cable (6mm T & E) connected to same circuit providing the Socket Outlet Ring, so both on a 32A Circuit. No isolation outside or inside bathroom and even worse, the CPC is connected to the hinge of the Dis Board metal box and no RCD. The shower is rated at 8.5kW. She said she was quoted nearly 300 quid to wire it up initially and plumb it in and some Portugese guy done it for 80 plus materials.

Peanuts & monkeys comes to mind!

john,

It needs to be put right correctly mate, and it is notifiable works, also, the landlady is well out of order as it is doubtful that it was certified and notified in the first place, there is a lot of landlords guidance out there, if I find some later when I am sorting the office I'll post the links up.

Before the 17th edition and Part P no one said you had to follow manufacturers instructions. I dont think you will find anything in the 16th about having to have a isolator or Rcd for a shower. Have you checked the wiring at least goes back to the Consumer unit.

Slips,

You may well be correct, however, there is something I remember prior to the 17th wrt rcd;s & showers.

However that comment presumes that the shower was installed prior to the 17th which has been with us for a few years now.

Also I suspect that is was installed post 17th & post pt P.

Even if there is no RCD requirement, & the install is to the 16th, I bet the supplementary bonding is not up to scratch!

I am not defending the installer, just making a point. I would not feel safe having a shower with an install as described. If you didnt get electrocuted then you will probably get burnt from the fire caused by overloaded board

I got it wrong, the circuit it is joined to is the kitchen socket outlets + cooker socket (1.5mm cable for kitchen ring), it was done about a year and a half ago. I mentioned when I moved in that the isolator for the shower should not be in the bathroom, so she called him back and he put a new cable in from the shower direct to the sub-consumer unit. I should get some pictures and show them on here. Its difficult to say too much as she is a good friend and I do her accounts/VAT plastering and decorating. I informed her that if anyone got killed she would be liable and would claim huge amounts on her public liability insurance and she replied 'what's that' she ain't got any.

I think any normal person who had a shower installed about year and half ago and it hasn't worked for months would be onto the person who installed it after a full refund and making serious steps to get it corrected. Lets hope that this doesn't kill or seriously injure someone or burn the place down. I would be reporting both the electrician and the landlady for negligence and putting persons lives at risk.

It gets worse by the minute
Understatement of the year I think Paul?

Update, shower still out of order. It is still connected into the consumer unit with the bare cpc connected to hinge and still connected live (i think). An electrician from the pub company came and done a PIR on pub and picked out

It needs someone to get hurt or loose their house/pub before anyone will take notice

joke

and some guys are arguing that metal back boxes should have earth connections !!!! FFS

Quick question is this related to your other post as you mentioned Portuguese in there as well and similar fauls ie 1.5 on ring? Is is that me just seeing things after a 14 hour shift and on a small screen?

No it is 2 separate properties in different locations. Pub is where I live and House round the corner is where I am eventually going to be plastering. There is a large Portugese population in Stockwell/Vauxhall and all of them believe they are multi-tradesmen and get involved with everything as nothing can not be sorted by them including rewires and electrical quick fixes. Unfortunately they haven't got a clue about what they are doing.
