Hi. Don't normally post anything on here but do enjoy reading the comments. When I done my time as an apprentice you could only call yourself an electrician if you could prove yourself in all fields ie: industrial, commercial and domestic. It appears now that a lot of people doing the 5ww like to think they are a "proper spark" but take them out of a domestic scenario and give them 100m of basket tray or ladder rack and say install that from A to B they would still be there scratching their heads 4 hours later. A good electrician should show an aptitude in all scenarios. The 5ww electricians are only managing to devalue the trade and make people believe its not that complex because you can become qualified in just a few weeks. This drives down wages in an already hard pressed market. On a different note there is also a lot of sparks out there with certificates coming out their ars****s who do not have a clue. They are good academically but **** with the practical side of the job!

Just so everyone knows been in trade 20 years 80% industrial/commercial and the rest domestic be it new build or lived in.

Mainly Commercial and Industrial for me , we do bits of domestic but rarely , I like working on new installations in schools, offices etc , currently working on a huge project in the NEast at the moment which is very enjoyable lots of tray, basket , ladder rack installations in a nice new clean empty shell, 3 years in July for me

Started out chopping in boxes in 700 flats for Universities before I even cut or saw a piece of cable. Also had to chop out fan holes, which sent my arms numb after two weeks. Put myself through college,s but it was a job I loved. Moved to Oz had to complete bridging course, mainly commercial at Adelaide airport shopping precinct. Day in day out putting in cable ladder and tray, pulling in armoured at the weekend, overhead busbar trunking, 45c plus heat. Got my Grade license for Oz. Moved back to UK and find could have done short course and not sweated so much lol did 17th and added 2391 to list of stars lol Mainly commercial not ya corner shop commercial. Do bit of domestic, usually putting other peoples work right. Safe Contractor, CHAS and for my sins JIB. Ironically gave up the same IMO we were working on to start my love affair with electrical. Sorry if i bored anyone.

I was homesick after ten years. My wife is struggling to adapt, so might end up going back. Honestly in hindsight, I thought I was doing the right thing, but the England I cherished and loved is no longer the same. I feel bad as promised my kids and wife everything but so far the lights have not come on.

its understandable,

I was in Kiwiland, and, due to circumstances, had to come back to the British isles again,[no, Im not being awkward, it was a crown dependency I had to return to], I had all my papers sorted and everything,

now Im trying/hoping to go back but its just so much harder now.

Sorry to hear that MKS. Its not the England I cherished and loved either I'm afraid. :(

That England only exists in our minds now , it will never be the same again , we put our trust in those we elect and they C***** it up totally between them.

I presume your missus is a Kiwi . A comment on Midlands local radio has always stuck with me . One of the phone- in presenters is an Aussie , so this woman calls and says her daughter, who is backpacking in Australia, phoned her to say they had decided to go to New Zealand next. The mother was worried and asks what its like there .

The Aussie presenter says "Think of England 40 years ago and thats basically New Zealand" It was meant as a compliment BTW.

You say " so far the lights have not come on " I'm no expert but I think this country has lost 2 phases , theres a massive volt drop, and because we're now overloaded , the current is too high for the system and its just a matter of time before it all goes mammeries up and the load shedding starts .

In maritime terms , this is the Titanic , there 'aint enough lifeboats, the working classes will be left till last , locked in the lower decks, we can hear the band playing, the iceberg's ahead and no one,s doing anything .

Get off at Cherbourg and take that ship to the southern hemisphere .

1" Hand Auger for drilling wood {still got mine, found it in garage last week! and Rawlplug Jumper for fibre plugs on walls but then Red If I remember correctly they were originally Black, bloke I worked with said they were rubbish...not as good as black ones,,,and would never use them [until they no longer made black ones, then they were fricking brilliant] plastic ones became available wooohoooo.

It's easy today :| :|

Fantastic analogy mate. However, my Mrs would crucify for you for calling her a kiwi lol she is an Aussie mate hehehe

Steps, I am lucky in that I hold dual passports. I guess my biggest regret was thinking what I left behind would still be there when I returned. At the very least I can say I came back and got it out my system.

Don't get me wrong I love my country and where I am from, but my heart and mind is back in the 90s. I do want my resting place here and ashes scattered over the Trent near my beloved Forest lol :)))
