Gents, I need a single-phase 3 hp motor. I've seen on eBay several motors that are described as "dual voltage", and one that is described as single phase, but the pictures of the motor spec plate show     V  230/250--460/500, although it clearly states on the plate "Single phase". It's a GEC motor, so I'm confident that it's not been misidentified. Can anyone help, please?

Are you sure it says " Single phase " on the plate  Mr Fuxsit ?

As far as I knew  a "Dual voltage " motor could be sold in ,say, the UK or the USA where in the UK it would be connected in Delta @ 380V X 3ph   or in the US  @ 220V X 3ph  but in Star  .

If it's not got a large capacitor (or two) then avoid it because it's almost certainly 3-phase. If in doubt with a GEC motor then get the exact model number and cross reference it on their website to get the datasheet.

Well it seems to come with a bit of 3 core flex attached so just connect it and try it.

The nameplate says it's single phase, no mention of 3 phase, so it must still have two windings that can be connected in series or parallel.

If it rotates the wrong way you can probably change some links over but make sure before changing anything you record exactly how it's connected now.

It's a 460/500v single phase motor it's just got split winding so it can be configured to run on 230V as well. It says '1ph' on the plate so it can't be run with 3-phase.

Here's the NEMA scheme

Its a single phase dual voltage motor - most common a while back on farms

Single phase 230 or Single phase 460 (two phases on a farm supply - can't remember at present (its been a long hot factory headache kind of day) what its called but they are 180 degrees apart with the Neitral centre tapped giving a two phase (single type) supply 230 - 0 - 230 )
Split phase?

Marvo,

Whilst I appreciate that there are only so may ways to achieve the end result, would the NEMA data be correct in detail, as it would be an "IEC" motor, as it is a D100L frame, and is a BS5000 motor, also, for info, this standard was withdrawn in 2002.

Canoe was posting the NEMA Vs IEC thought the same time I was!

Yes - split phase. Same as the job I posted last year, with the 400V switchgear, and a meter reading of 496V phase / phase.

But the last three PIRs stated TP / 400/230V. Frigging muppetised arses!!!!!

Usually provided when there are only two lines of HV in the vicinity

Posting the NEMA dwg probably confused the issue with hindsight. It was to illustrate the split winding arrangement but I didn't have the IEC reference to hand. The wiring will be schematically the same but the colours and numbering will be different.
