1966: Street lighting began to be improved with the introduction of Sodium lamps (the orange lights that are still used today).

Nikola Tesla pioneered the use of polyphase AC. This was championed by Westinghouse in direct rivalry to Edisons DC system. Both parties held public demonstrations to show how dangerous the others system was by electrocuting dogs!

The first recorded electrocution was unfortunately of a technician setting up a public demonstration of electricity. He was electrocuted in front of the audience.

In America and sometimes in Britain, the high voltage overhead systems are worked on live. Typically in America a lineman dies every week. This is an improvement over the early days when the fatality rate for linemen was almost 100%.

There are very few deaths associated with live work in the British power distribution industry, but with the increasing use of generic facilities contractors and immigrant labour, the death rate has recently risen dramatically. Fortunately immigrants are expendable and their electrocutions can be written off by HSE as accidental death, death by misadventure or "heart failure".

Nikola Tesla envisaged a system whereby the upper ionosphere could be charged with respect to ground and properties would receive their electrical supply by on-roof electric aerials.

TRUE!!!!!!

If we could harness the power of just 1 flash of lightening it would be equivalent to a 20 MW power station running for 50 hours continuously. The rate of lightning is 100 flashes per second all over the globe.Imagine the possibilities!

It's a little known fact that because slow cookers only consume 50W of power they turn all your food into something resembling uncooked soup.

If left on for 20 hours a slow cooker will consume one unit of electricity which could have been used to make approximately one ton of crispy oven chips.

When rushing out to work it's proven to be unwise to use a V-slicer to chop vegetables directly into a slow cooker. This is because you will probably fail to use the vegetable holder on awkward vegetables like carrots and put your hand through the slicer in the rush to get to work. True! X(

In 1847 Edison conducted an experiment on a mentally ill patient and concluded that it takes just one Ampere at 400V DC to blow an average male adults cock in half.

During an unrelated experiment, Nikola Tesla discovered that just 50mA at 50Hz was a sufficiently high enough current to cause muscular contraction of enough magnitude to crack walnuts between the thighs of his cleaning lady.

Do you have any evidence of the above? Not really pub ammo but fairy stories! ;)

Yeah, but they're a darn sight more interesting than the other stuff. Besides, after a few beers they'll believe anything. Guiness Drink
