With the 63 amp rcd boards with 6 amp and 32 amp breakers in for a garage I was going to put in a 4mm twin fed of the house board off a 32amp breaker as the current carrying capacity of 4mm is 37 amps. What does every one else use as a rule ?

Discrimination between the two 32A breakers? Would you not be better fitting a 6A and 16 or 20A in the garage. As for the 4mm that's going depend on other factors e.g. length of run / volt drop......................

Dare I ask...is it an attached garage or will you be supplying your own earth?

Well there is nothing wrong with a 2.5 cable off a 20 amp its only feeding lights and sockets in a small garage.

4mm or 6mm (remember we dont know how you'll run the cable or the building fabric) from house cu on 32amp mcb/rcbo

In garage use a cu with 6A & 20A mcb/rcbo

or as the garage is attached to the house

just run a radial 4mm from the house cu into garage for the sockets, add a fused spur (fuse it down to 3amp) & run light off the fused spur.....rcd/rcbo circuit as required.

I would always(price allowing) fit the largest cable

In this case maybe 6mm to allow for a little spare capacity for the future( hardly any mega price change from 4mm to 6mm)

Lost count of how many 'oh just a light and a socket to Hoover the car' jobs end with 'wife wants to put freezer/tumble dryer/caravan hook up/mig welder in the garage .......'
