WHen installing cables from new i know obviously they need to be rcd protected. When i put garage armoureds in as a  off the house board i go off the rcd side in to the garage board obviously the circuits are protected by rcd in the rcd fuse box my question is does the sub main armoured cable have to be rcd protected its just i heard on a previous post it doesnt is it not allowed to have the armoured running off the normal power side of the house board any help thankful

have a look through 7671. you will find all the answers in there

and if you 'know obviously they need RCD protected', then why are you asking if a cable needs RCD protected...

Sorry i honestly wasnt thinking at all industrial sub mains are not rcd protected so why is it any different for a domestic sub main its being on domestic i just thought sub mains had to be rcd protected with the armoured being outside or underground aswell thats how ive been doing them so definetly it doesnt need additional protection?

I'm afraid that is an inaccurate generalisation.... RCD protection has absolutely no relevance to whether it's a domestic, commercial or industrial installation

because industrial usually has stricter laws with electric at work regulations, H&S etc, so the wiring should be looked after better and no idiots working on it, so it doesnt need as much protection as domestic

but regardless of where its installed, it may need RCD protection or it may not need it

The reason why im asking is my mate is doing work on his garage plus the electrics i havent done many garages the ones at my work just get cut off because they arnt private houses.i would say yes the armoured does need rcd protection its like when you dont do them often im its like ill just rcd it anyway.i dont have a clue whether it can get away with not needing it.My other question is when separating completely tailing off to a garage board on its own whats the right way of doing this?.Is it tails in to garage board db1 with rcd protection near the house board  4mm 3 core armoured on a 32 amp mcb from db2. Feeding db2 garage board in garage with rcd protection on that board aswell. Im quite confident of this i havent done one of these in ages.this is right having the 2 fuseboards i assume?

I have to say I admire your persistence despite the comments you receive, but I truly do believe that you need a little more guidance and understanding than you're ever going to get on a forum.

Please if you really wish to commit to becoming the electrician you want to be, team up with a more competent electrician for the experience.

Forget about the total separate tails with db1 and db2 nothing wrong with it worked it out myself .As far as the armoured from house board in to garage definetly rcd protection cheers for your little or no help on this one its like getting blood out of a stone when i ask something !

are you surprised by the answers? you always ask very basic questions that would usually be covered even on a 5 week course. and the answers are usually in 7671. its a useful book - you should get one

OK i will read up on my bs7671 under locations in a garage

Can you post back here what you find in that section please?  Also what page number it starts at?  I would not mind doing some refreshing on that section myself.

Had a brief look in bs7671 found nothing ill look in on site guide tomoz b easier to locate

Try looking in the index for "RCD"  or "RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICES".....

I think you will find that starts at 487 continuing onto 488.....

You should find from there all of the applications, situations and references where BS7671 says you need to apply RCD protection..

If your scenario is NOT included then you probably don't need it....

If it IS then you do....

As long as you avoid :Hits the fan:  then you will be :happy bunny: but....

from the history of past threads I do fear it may be..  :DeadHorse:

who knows....

:C

oh lordy, so what's the earthing system RB? Personally I would be looking to RCd out in the garage where it's more use. Sub main shouldn't need it, and taking supply from RCD side of the CU is storing hassle fo the future.. But can I suggest you do some research and post what you think is correct on here, you will get  alot more support if you do. And no text speech please.
