On the original query:

Im having an office built in my garden can the power be taken from a fused 13a spur off the main ring ? In the office there will be 4 off double sockets 1 off light and underfloor heating which will use about 1600 watts its about 30 meters away to so will 4mm swa do?
While a 13A spur might seem adequate for the anticipated load, I don't feel it leaves a huge amount of leeway for equipment after allowing for the 1600W heating load. It depends how large this office is going to be and what's going to be in it, but you could easily end up with the 1600W heating, plus 100W for the one-off light, plus another couple of hundred watts in desk lamps or similar, plus a few hundred more watts in computer equipment, etc. By the way, remember that while it's not a continuous load, laser printers can draw 1000 to 1500W (or more) when running.

And is the 1600W heating likely to need to be supplemented by a convector or fan heater in especially cold weather, perhaps?

Personally, while going to all the trouble of installing everything, I'd be inclined to just run a 30A feed out there to have plenty of capacity.

You just don't get it, do you?You don't need DNO permission to do anything on the cosumer side - as long as it complies with BS 7671!

I've spoken to EON, Ive spoken to Scottish Power and Ive spoken to the IET - none of them have a problem with it.

Can you get this in writing from them because this debate would be more or less over if 2 DNO's and the IET can put it in black and white. Its funny how I rang EON 2 weeks ago and they said I would have to go TT or have a new supply for outbuildings. You never did say who you spoke with when asked earlier in this thread (post no.11), so any names and positions of staff or are you making unsubstantiated statements now.

The two DNOs said it's nothing to do with them - consumer side - they're only concerned with the installation complying with the regs!

Name and position ?

The IET said it

Well my two penny worth is if you call the DNO (Scottish & Southern in my area) you'll get one of the following answers...these are the sort of answers I tend to get from them when asking about removing service fuse, exporting suppliers earth.

Dont know

Should be ok

Do it & I'll make a note on the customer details

As for outbuildings if it's (the building) not connected to the maine qipotential zone it gets TT'd......why?......because thats how I was taught.
