Apache, or anyone with a modicum of knowledge of fish.....

I have a goldfish in a little tank, about 3 gallon or so,

but its not really a goldfish tank, its a breeding ground for algae,

why?

my missus got this tank from a friend and I have a funny feeling its actually a breeding tank of some sort(algae?)

there is a filter of sorts that sucks water up from the bottom 1" and spreads it onto a sponge filter and back into the tank,

but my concern is the lighting arrangement,

it has 2 lights,

a blue one (UV?) and a normal white one, the blue one can be switched on its own, but when the white one is turned on the blue one is on too.

I was going to swap the tubes over so the white one will come on on its own.

would this be the problem? the blue one (UV?) breeding the green stuff?

its away from direct sunlight etc.

thanks.

BTW, the tank says "BETTA" on it if that is of any help, maybe thats just a manufacturer.

some blue tubes are to simulate "moonlight" for nocturnal fish; which goldfish aren`t. It shouldn`t be a true UV if the tube is visible; it could blind you!!!! Maybe a blacklight?? UV tubes are utilised to flocculate the algae (i.e. make it clump together for the filters to catch it) ;) .

If you`re away from sunlight with the tank; the best thing could be to replace the filter - i`d prob. do a 50% water change at the same time, TBH - one goldfish isn`t going to be creating much ammonia to upset the water ph mate.

Can you post the code(s) on the tubes? It may help to know what they are?

I believe you can get some water snails that will eat the algae, and if you get too many snails you can get other snails that prey on the algae eating snails. Its all about having a balance within the tank. But this is from one that doesn't have a fish tank :)

By the way how long have you been hoarding

Too much algae could be because the tank is in direct sunlight ?????

or the tank lightring is on too long

filter could be past its best

pump may not be strong enough to cerculate the water hence the build up

water vin the tank too hot ???

you can get algae treatment drop quite cheap

any plants ????? this normally keeps it down

list is endless mate

there is something round here that the water board have introduced into the water supply, which is causing a lot of people tanks and ponds to get algea very quickly, we have a pond as you know and i also have setup 2 x tanks and both get very algea covered very quickly since the last couple of months, its a chemical thats in the water to stop the water freezing in the low temps lately, that is still filtering through.

Have you got any evidence for that Badger, because I don't believe you!

Steps - do you have any living plants in your tank? If not you don't need the UV light. Some people use it as a crude means on sterilising the water, but it's mainly for plant photosynthesis. If there are no plants I would remove it.

If I was you I would give everything a really good clean with dilute household bleach and rise well and dechlorinate after. You should do the gravel, the inside of the pump. If it has a removable and replaceable filter swap that.

Don't overfeed your fish.

ok, done a 20% water change, clean of the glass, rinsed filter sponge out(in its own water), and changed the lamps so only the white tube functions now.

will give it until the weekend and if no improvement then its onto Apaches method of powerwashing everything and fitting new filter sponge and replacing gravel, (I have some spare, sponges and gravel).

Canoey - Plec is fine, as long as you don`t get a lazy beggar like mine - he sucks the gravel clean, but ignores the stuff on the glass - need to trade him in, TBH
Go to Trade Centre Wales, Neath Abbey, Neath, and tell them Trevor sent you. :)

update,

removed blue/black/UV lamp, complete water change, cleaned pump & filter etc, scrubbed tank out with plain water, washed gravel etc,

blanked/cover the one side of the tank that may get direct sunlight, and added de-chlorination stuff

and 10 days later all is still good, :)

oh, and I found out something else as well, the missus kept turning the pump/filter off, dunno if that would make much difference, but have told her to leave it on all the time now.
