Yup, we`ve just had one similar, from a maintenance guy:

Car park lighting, on BS88 6A. (5 posts, 2 single head, 3 dual head 150W MH / 70W SON). Fuse blows - replace.

Blows again - fit 10A

Blows again - fit 30A

Stays on for 30 secs - blows.

Call us.

The *original problem" was a melting ballast in an MH fitting; caused by failure of the seal on the glass allowing water ingress.

The 30A fuse caused damge to the underground SWA feeding the posts (approx 60M) ; rendering it unusable.

So, from a small (replace fitting) job; it became a nice big job.

On the good side, I covered the maintenance guy`s rear with his boss, and got a load of freebies from him........Plus I get a well paying job instead of a noddy one.
