Thanks for everyones input on this matter. To clarify I am not trying to bodge it, however was trying to think of a way to get it done for her with the least disruption, cost and also from a risk assessment point of view. It would be great if I could replace and lower the consumer unit for her and do some rewiring but I know that is out of the question.

For the outlay on the guardian cable (thanks Canoeboy for the price) I think it might be worth purchasing it and using it just for additions to circuits.

It would actually reduce the customer bill when used on short runs as they wont be paying for RCBO/RCD where needed for buried cables <50mm depth. So it might help to beat other electricians quotes and customers are always moaning when you tell them you have got to make changes to their CU.

 
personally id always prefer rcds on certain circuit, apart from security equipment stuff like here the computers, the cctv system, alarm system, and our internet system, (yes they are all dedicated circuits :)
