what is the maximum emergency lights you can on one 6amp breaker the problem is after ten mins of being on it trips the breaker many thanks Ash

the problem is a restaurant ive been to today have been running 18 emergency lights one 8 foot fluorescent and 6 x 5 foot fluorescent on one 6 amp breaker and been running like this for well over a year and the problem has started with the breaker tripping we have moved the emergency lights onto another circuit with less lighting and we still have the problem would you advise the emergency lights to be on there own breaker many thanks Ash

er... there is now a fault of the circuit tripping. so your solution to the problem is to split the circuits up instead of fixing the problem?

most likely problem is a faulty ballast. or a number of faulty ballasts.

emergency lights should be ont he same circuit as the other lighting. think about it. you want them to come on when general lighting fails. if its on a different curcuit, this wont always happen

Ashley,

Before you work on Em ltg you must be familiar with the requirements of 5266 mate, there is strict statute law involved here.

IF someone burns to death in that restaurant tonight because the EM ltg did not work in the fire then you would be held accountable.

Sorry bud, but, the law on EM is more than the law regarding 7671.

You really need to think about the fault and the circuit design rather than swap things around.

Andy has said a few things, but, think, what else do self contained EM fittings have, that is allowing for the fact that they are self contained not centrally powered?...

Aren't we more likely talking about some component or other failing after being switched on for a short while? Or what about a break down of insulation somewhere on the circuit, due to heat, damp, rodent damage. All of these could produce your symptoms. I would go back to basic fault finding techniques proving each area until you locate the cause.

Ive had my house for 50years and its always been OK,

yesterday my MCB kept tripping out for my smoke detectors,

Ive stopped smoking, will this help it?

sorry to be so sarcastic,

but why after a year would the same loading be a cause of an MCB tripping out?

the only reason an MCB will go OC is overload,

so either more loading has been added, or a fault has occurred to cause an overcurrent situation.
