This cowboy seems to be particularly stupid.

If you are carrying on a trade doing shoddy work you need to keep your head down. Taking a customer to court for a small unpaid bill is just asking for his shoddy work to be brought into question and brought to the attention of trading standards.

This must be the dumbest cowboy in the land.

What is an RCD?
Residual current device. The thing that trips if an earth fault current of more than 30mA flows. It's supposed to cut the power quickly if someone gets an electric shock for instance.

If you have one, it will be in your consumer unit with a little yellow test button.

If you don't have one, then for most of the work done, it would have been a requirement to upgrade parts of your installation to include one. So that may be another thing to add to the list of faults.

Sorry. Here's video on how to. (on the Search within that video, if you look under the search button you will see an "Advanced Search" link). Use that to get a more precise list.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/qLUZdTHvWlw?feature=oembedHere's the Directory of UK Electricians link:

Andy is about 20 miles from you - and here are his details. They won't show in the search result if you use the keywords Co Durham or County Durham, as has not listed it as his area on his ad. (This is why I recommend that all electricians listing their businesses in our Free Electrician Directory - spend sometime and list as many areas that they cover, as they can). :)

Yep, that light switch should not be there, no question about it.

And as for that Certificate of conformity, that's meaningless.

AS we have said before an EIC is what's needed. So when you have your day in court, tell them you will pay when the job is finished, and it's not finished until an EIC has been issued.

When you get the EIC hand it to trading standards as he will be certifying it complies with the current wiring regs, which it doesn't.

Its not meaningless, it evidence in court.

He also claims to be working to ISO 9000, 2000.

Is he certified for this.

He claims all work was carried out to the 17th, clearly not.

Its in a bathroom, Part P applies, I bet its not been notified.

You should also (as a matter of urgency) get 2 or 3 quotes for rectifying the poor and non complying work and then issue a counter suit for that amount. You should do this before you go to court to defend against his suit. This will form part of your defence. You should also ask the quotees to give you a short report on what's wrong, referencing any building regs if possible (though your electrician will reference BS7671:2008 and can issue an EICR).

Oh, and as you are the defendant you can ask for the case to be heard in any County Court that is convenient to you. So, if you can do it, request it be heard in Manchester or Sheffield - make it awkward for him and show him you're not a pushover. I would say he's trying to use "scare tactics".
