Hi, im Alan, ive got a one armed bandit from the 70s and i need to renew the mains wire, im not an electrician, but i know the basics, except this,, its a 3 core mains cable to the machine, do i have to replace this with a similar 3 core cable, ie does it NEED to be earthed, very grateful for any advice before i move on to my pinball machine, ha ha. Alan

Welcome to the forum. Yes you do need to use the same amount of cores in the new flex and of similar size as to what you are taking off.

If its got lots of external metal parts its almost certainly got to be earthed!

I would guess that modern equivalent may have double insulated ClassII construction to reduce any risk of electric shock from people using the machine...

As another point to note check where the cable enters the bandit, it may need improved grommet or gland protection around the cable entry point.

e.g.  http://www.screwfix.com/p/ip68-nylon-gland-white-20mm-pack-of-10/17058?cm_sp=Search-_-SearchRec-_-Area1&_requestid=1258484

If its from the 70's ( what's it called? Curious) it probably was made by bell fruit and if so it would have a round style socket on the back door or below and the mains lead would have a round plug style socket, the cable will need to be a 3 core and will need an earth but the cable could be bought from any wholesaler and if you can wire a plug you could make a new lead.

This is a very strange one only last week a client of mine bought a one arm bandit that took 6th pen es had lights on the front and weighed an absolute ton when they bought it the seller cut the lead off has it was a very old fashioned plug and socket attached to the back of the bandit.

This was earthed I drilled a 20mm hole in the back put a stuffing gland in and renewed the flex and plug top replaced the t5 tubes and starters and is working good as new. I also pat tested it

Which one is yours ?, i have a couple of Jubilee Rivera's from the 70s, ones called Crazy Coppers and the other Rainbow falls. They are 100% mechanical and the electric is only for the light.

Just follow the wires where each one goes, it probably does need earthing as even like mine, the ballast is metal. Take some pics first.

Thanks everyone, il do it this weekend, its a Aristocrat regal 22 with the AZTEC GOLD theme, i bought it as a non workin rusted up heap, now the chrome is shining and the mechanics are unsiezed, its mechanical with electric payout and a nice example of the transition from mech payout to electric, i love it but its gotta go when rewired as i bought it as an investment, takes shillings of which there are hundreds, im grateful for the advice, Alan

Right then, get a sheet of that dodgy back board from B&Q build a cabinet then use MAME on an old pc. Space Invaders, Space Invaders 2, Galaxian, Scramble, Lunar Lander, Defender, Phoenix.....................Oh the memories!

These may be worth a look???

oh, technology has surpassed me yet again,

is this some new fangled thing from the '80s then?
On a serious note, this lad Paul Grainger collects the things. He's down in Brighton though. I've had a few car bits from him over the years. I've emailed him tonight for pointers to "where" for such a machine. Cheers.
