Hello all,

Been asked to fit a burglar alarm for a past customer. Its a simple wireless alarm he is getting from argos. No problems installing the alarm but should I write something into the quote as a disclaimer incase it doesn't go off if someone breaks in? If so how should I word it?

I would definitely get him to sign something. You guarantee your workmanship of course but what about the system itself. there would be a guarantee from Argos. You cant guarantee against him getting broken into and someone defeating the alarm.

me personally i wont fit security equipment, fuse boards, unless supplied by me, i only will use certain equipment, and therefroe, if someone said ive bought this alarm from wickes, argos, do it all, focus, homebase, alarms are us :^O or any other diy merchant, (put those to keep the piece ; )Applaud Smiley i would simply decline the installation as i do not know the kkit and therefore will not install products im not familar with!

for stuff like this, i usually avoid fitting customer supplied. also make them aware that if it has to be remvoed , returned & refitted because its faulty, then you will be charging for the removal & refitting of any materials not supplied by you

I wouldn't even bother fitting it. It'll not be worth it in the long run.

As above unless yopu supply it the responsibility is his.done the same as a favour for the wifes friend and cr*p bought from diy store took ages to setup fob set unset.

Still waiting for the promised beer token.

If you want help him drill the holes for the Pir's to be fitted set it up on a table then walk.

really, thats the only useful part about wireless alarms!

The Infinite is better than stuff you get from Argos, but I'm on about proper alarms. Don;t dismiss stuff just because you've never fitted a proper one. You wouldn;t say cars are crap just because the first one you drove was 1982 Yugo, would you?

never fitted an argos alarm, but im still going to say its crap!

i prefer wired, and never have a problem with them. as for infinite, never again. if customer wants wireless, then ill look into other manufacturers

I would never install a wireless alarm for anyone..

too much agro & carp..

I have took a few out for people though & put proper wired ones in.

IMHO a reasonable wired alarm don't cost too much & as long as you change the back-u battery every 3 or 4 years all works a treat!

as for wireless !!!.

I would ask the customer for a disclaimer off THEM to confirm they have no spurious radio signals around their property likely to cause false alarms, or dead patches where the sensors wont communicate.

Ask them to verify THEY have fully tested it before any items are fixed to the wall... and that they are satisfied you are only doing drill & fix work, you will NOT be waiting whilst on site for them to finish configuring or testing any part of the installation!

was at a job before Christmas putting some outside lights up, customer had bought a wireless alarm, asked me to put 2 external bell boxes up while I was there...

I put one up, carried on doing my outside light

went to move ladder to put second one up..

Customer asked me to take first one down!

he was sending it back cuz it wouldn't stop going off!!

he'd been on the phone for half hour to alarm tech support...

there answer...

Oh looks like you have some local interference!!!! :(

In the words of Monty Python..

RUN AWAY!

I'm sorry but usually you talk sense, not today. If you have only fitted a couple of rubbish wireless alarms you can;t dismiss all wireless alarms. There are decent ones out there, but most electricians and DIYers will have never installed them as you can;t buy them in CEF or Argos. Yes wired is better if preferable, but in general the wireless arguments in this thread are wildly unsubstantiated.

I shall just carry on talking non-sense then??? :p :p:p:p:p

" If you have only fitted a couple of rubbish wireless " Nope! I cannot see where I said that? Bit harsh for you to assume things about another persons abilities or dismiss their statements as 'wildly unsubstantiated' !!!?? Doh! :|

If you look back and read the original question....

We are discussing an alarm system that the customer has bought themselves from Argos!

If you want to open a general debate on the pro's and cons of wireless -vs- hard wired and a persons ability to evaluate what is good or bad product may be best not to hi-jack another's thread?

:( :|

good job that post was wildly unsubstantiated as well! :|

I didn't start the debate on the pros and cons of wireless if you look. ;)

Fair enough. What wireless alarms have you fitted? What was the one that went back as faulty that the customer supplied?
