Is the only way to disable an alarm box to remove the battery. Disconnected from the mains as alarm will not stop going off also removed battery from main panel, but alarm still going off in outdoor box.. how long before battery runs out.

Can u remove battery from bell box there's normally a jumper lead on them

no idea of make of alarm system about 16 years old. bell box too high to remove cover. need extra long ladders

The external box is sounding because it cannot see the reference voltage form the main panel....

Thats why a lot of peoples alarms go off in a power cut with knackerd main panel battery!,

By sticking the correct voltage to the correct wires it will stop. ;)

BUT some manufactures have slightly different names for the various wire connections between panel & box. :_|

Have you got any documentation for the panel?

The external box is often a rechargeable lithium battery pack, which only has to power a very low current drain high output sounder. ....

so it could go for many hours! :|

A box of these for the neighbors may help???

Big hammer & crowbar! :innocent

What work are you actually doing?

Is the Alarm to be kept?

If it is that old.....

I would suggest to the customer they have a new panel and external bell box fitted onto their existing sensors and wiring....

Assuming all cables in good order then should be quite straight forward.

Well, if getting up there isn't an option then you either connect the panel battery to the +ve and -ve to keep it alive (only a good option for short times) or you turn it off and let it ring. Technically it should shut up after 20 mins...... but some old ones dont.

no the alarm is not going to be kept, i'm not doing any work, a friend of mine & the alarm started going off this morning at 8.00 so i suggested disconnecting from mains & let the battery run down however it seems to be taking a long time considering the battery is 16 years old.

Drill a hole in the side of the bell box and spray in the expanding foam. And if your not keeping the alarm just use a crowbar to prise it off the wall and cut the cable.
