Just bought a laptop to use with the business instead of my desktop, but still need to use the desktop from time to time

Wondering how to sync files between the two, my son mentioned something called Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTgyODk3MjY5

It's brilliant, this will sync any files in the Dropbox folder that you work on irrespective of which computer you work on, you can also share folders with friends, best of all it keeps a backup in "the cloud" of those files so if you are a bit forgetful on backup it's automatic

No real catch so far as I can see, Cost is free for 2Gb of cloud space, but you can get up to 8Gb free through referrals, so not a bad deal

Linux and Mac supported too!

At last something useful unlike Facebook!!!!

Mine are side-by-side in the office - they`re on a shared network with 2 network printers (b&w laser, and colour multifunction). Any file on any machine, available by the other or printable to either printer (or the dedicated photo printer which is USB`d to the peecee). Cost nowt.

KME

get a NAS(network accessible storage) and relocate your my documents folders onto it. easy.

I think robo is talking about changing a file on one computer will automatically change the same file on the other pc too,

ie, mark an invoice as paid, will also show that invoice as paid on the other pc too without having to do it manually.

file sharing is different, but it involves you manually having to retrieve each file.

I use FNAS too, and a thing called ubuntuONE , same as the cloud thing, and free :D

On the ball as always Steps, that was my point, no matter which computer I use even when I'm out and about, the changes are replicated in my Dropbox's, if I raise an invoice while out it will be on my desktop when I get back, I don't need to connect to my home network to sync, it syncs with the cloud and backed up in real time

And it's free for 2.5Gb which is more than enough for me

And I to have a NAS, shared printers etc have done for years, this is not the same as file sharing as Steps mentions

If you want a good free sync software try Allways Sync http://allwaysync.com/is quite simple to use and can be used over a network, memory stick etc.
Dropbox just needs an internet connection, you don't need to use any USB sticks, you also have a backup in the cloud, and you can step back in time too!

Allways is free with limitations on functionality, Dropbox only costs if you want more space than the free 2.5Gb

I must have a look at dropbox robo , would make it easier for my missus to know I got the pics of the kid when she uploads them to the laptop.
there is an option to share folders such as your pics etc, not looked at that yet, possibly like photobucket but without the need to upload, just put the pics in a Dropbox folder and share that with friends and family

You could map a network drive on one machine and then use Windoze offline files facility, but beware of cache corruption, have used this on 7 machines across 2 sites for file synchronisation on a peer 2 peer network over the last few years, and it works well until the offlinc cache gets corrupted, have not lost much data but it takes an age to sort, have had a bad time over the last few weeks as i have been moving master data and had 3 corrupt cache folders.

One of the reasons I have been quiet on here and another why I'm posting at this time!

Not sure you've sold anyone on this M$ solution mate ;)

Having played around with Dropbox for a few days now, I can only recommend it even more, basically it works!!!!

The only thing is it is automatic and just happens on log on/off.

There is another M$ solution which is effortless, which is the powertoy called synctoy, which seems to work better than offline files.

Mind offline files seems to be more of an issue with p2p rather than domains!

I don;t want to have to remember to update my files, offline & synctoy do it automatically for you, ofline files when it works is seamless.

Mind I am pushing it to the limit!

2 NAS devices at one site, 4 laptops between 2 sites, and desktop at the one side, with 2 desktops at the other, across 2 p2p networks with different private ip addresses but in the same workgroup.

It also includes 6 networked printers and a primitive link between sites!

just like Mr Gates data collection on you,

its auto on log on,

everything you do he can access.

even if you disable all auto updates its in the T&Cs of windozes for M$ to collect your data any time it sees fit.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU

Well I can say for certain that I'm not watching Big Brother! :D

Think it's something we'll have to get used to, like it or lump it :(
WHY.?

I dont. there are never any ports open on my computer that I dont allow to open.

why would you want someone else to know you bank card number? or anything else for that matter.

OK, nothing is safe, but accepting the T&Cs of something that tells you it will access your data anytime it feels like it is just IMHO asking for trouble.
