Anyone ggod at fixing applinances????

Indesit oven FI 31 K - basic built unit. As it heats up, oven cuts out including oven lamp. Lamp then returns to working, but oven refuses to work until it has cooled down some more (as indicated by small neao light that illuminates when element is heating up. Nothing obvious like burnt wires or loose connections, though slight smell of electrical burning does occurr. I'm suspecting main switch is faulty, or thermostat connected to main switch, any suggestions please.

Could be a faulty element, possibly main switch. Sounds liek it's working properly though, although when you say 'cools down' do you mean until the oven temp is just about cold?

No, cuts back in long before oven gets cold, it all appears to beworking fine, element working off thermostat fine, until at some point after running for 20mins, oven cuts out , oven light cuts out, main fan cuts out. Give it some time to settle, and it all comes back to life again. Just think it is weird that oven light dies at the same time. I am suspecting main switch/thermostat problem, but I'm not completely convinced.

Sounds like a thermal cutout is... cutting in. Since you can smell electrical burning I'd suggest a dodgy connection to, or, tco on its last legs.

Sorry for all the technical terms! :^O

No, not a common failure mode that really. I'd be starting round the stat, could also be a high resistance joint somewhere, eventually breaking down after a spell of high current warms it up and it finally goes proper high res.

Just needs a good stripping down and testing with insulation tester and multimeter, could be one of a few things.

I'm just confused as to why the oven light goes off at the same time.
This is why I was thinking high resistance joint somewhere as it's cutting the lot out rather than a designed cutout taking just the element out.

Anyone know a good site to get service manual download??
Should be pretty straight forward, just work through it in a methodical manner. I'll have a look but I've never used one when fixing appliances.

Hi binky, I hope all is well. I appreciate this thread is over 10 years old however I have just created this account because I have the exactly same issue with the same oven! Did you get to the bottom of the problem in the end and if so please can you share how to remedy? Thank you

Apologies, I was being a complete nit wit. There was a small piece of foil covering the fan slightly causing the issue!
