Job is to change all light fittings downstairs in a property, just fittings, no circuit modifications.

16th edition board, no RCD protection to the circuit in question.

Do I need to RCD the circuit even though i'm actually not altering the circuit at all?

Cheers

NO.

Like for like replacement are NOT alterations to a circuit & neither do they need to be Part-P notified even if in a bathroom or kitchen

BUT..

It would be wise to advise the customer of changes to current regs and suggest something like:-

You may want to consider upgrading the circuit to fully comply with current regulations which provides greater protection to yourself from the risk of electric shock. Suggest it would be

Cheers guys, property is brand new and must have been a very late 16th edition install, all wiring in the CU is spot on, neat tidy etc.

Will advise as to new regs as you suggest and give him the option.

It's a Crabtree Starbreaker unit and I think you can get a replacement Busbar which would enable the addition of another RCD, at the moment he has 4 circuits on the existing RCD and 6 on the Main Switch. Could be a cheaper option to fully upgrade all his circuits.

Very true.

You can get replacement bus bars

go here..

download the Crabtree consumer unit literature..

http://www.electrium.co.uk/downloads.php

and you can find the exact Part No's you need your Wholesaler to get hold of! ;)

Correction to previous... (who's a silly git)... post! :^O

Download the full Crabtree catalogue..

(the consumer unit download is just the ready built combinations.. {I think:pBlushing} )

then look around page 106 onward..

that has all the bus-bar combinations! ;)

Would'nt you have to RCBO the circuit if the fittings where going from say plastic to metal.

problems u get is when they say, can u put some downlights in as well, cus every one seems to want downlights, then u need to rcd it,

No circuit mods, even with downlights, why would you need to RCD the circuit?

if they want down lights they will want more than 1 per room so u would be adding lights

your gonna have to add a bit of wire to the circuit, so its an addition and will need to be done to 17th.

one other way to decide if its to be done to 17th or not is why is the work being done - if its because the part has failed, then replace. if they want it replaced (because they dont like the existing), then may be a good case to do work to 17th

hi,

according to everyone on here, only the new part/alteration needs to be to the 17th - so in the case of more down lights this won't require an rcd as you won't be burying wires in walls?

O.

if u added extra light upstairs eg downlights and all the extra wiring was in the loft, clipped direct, would it requier installing rcd as the cable u install is not buried?
