Has to be, doesn`t it.

note that, at one point the "sparx" gets quals later this year; then he`s qualified now.

Qualified in what, exactly.??

Can we get the part p police to trace this install from the IP address, and go round with "all guns blazing"??

Or do we wait until some numpty leaves a house blazing. Then it`ll be us who`ve standards have slipped???? Don`t think so.

So why are paying all this money into the providers, when they are not, with LABC, reciprocating by policing the part p dodgers? I`m getting a little bit p155`d off with all these non-qualified halfwits, who`ll change a CU in 90 mins for

probably the same side to stop it tripping....
Have you seen the CCTV released today of people ignoring the Flashing red lights and barriers at level crossings, scary stuff

Does it remind you of any recent topic ; \ ; \ :^O :) :(

you mean the vid where its so close the train takes his shoe off?!

Instead of showing the near misses, they should show the car being destroyed and taken down the track a few hundred metres, or the charv being bounced over the train and into the power line with a nice blue flash to go with it

or maybe a picture of someone getting electrocuted because he touched an 'earth' that someone made live because they didnt do the job properly

Can't think what you are talking about :^O :^O:^O:( :_| :(

The Sparky worked for a company, ( I don't want to name ) Thory he did this off his own back at the weekends. He can`t certificate this himself, his qualification test is later this year. The company he worked for were asked to do the job, but after 3 weeks and several phone calls, they failed to give a quote for the job. the sparky who did the job worked also on my dad`s house on bigger job than mine, and that worked out fine.So unfortunately, I have no `official` paperwork to say this was done. There were channels cut out of the wall, the cables layed in and then plastered over. if I were to pull a cable out it would damaged the walls.

I mentioned above that I may have the time to out out the wall again and put a new cable in, but I realised this morning that would be impossible, as the cable (upstairs) runs thro a stud partition, and the room each side of that is now complete, so I cant disturb that wall. There is no other way of getting another cable between the switches. ( what are these remote ones guys are on about - never knew about them ? )

If I could route new cables I would for sure.

Red tape I know is the incorrect colour - just what I had to hand at the time, either that or yellow. All wiring in the house is new, so new colours throughout

I understand that yeah, the earth is not insulated as a live within the cable run, hence I was originally worried and posted this. The thing is, other than that point, I am confident that its `safe`

NO ITS NOT.. Please dont fool yourself.. initially you sounded a reasonably intelligent person? :|

as even if the wire touches anything else, it would be exactly the same as a real live touching, - the CU would trip. The temporary live (e) would be protected in the same way as a real live. Tho please understand that I do know that is not a good enough excuse, but can you see why I questioned its use?

I`m quite sure too that it would not pass. We plan to get that done in the very near future, - just need to put a ring main in the garage, and wire up external security lights.
I think from your own admission ALL of the flowing are true.

1/ you were looking for a cheap job done at the weekends knowing you will have NO electrical installation certificate AND NO building regulation part P compliance certificate.

2/ You know you are using the wrong cable AND the wrong colours!

Twin and earth or three core and earth cable is just that ..

two or three conductors PLUS an EARTH!!!

NOT three choose what you want to do conductors.

or four choose what you want to do conductors.

3/ You know full well you could have asked several companies to quote for this work to be done and certified properly, and one of them could probably have done the work within your timescales.

So IMHO you have four options.

1/ scrap the second two-way option, just wire one single two way correctly.

2/ pull another cable in!

3/ use these wireless switch things.

4/ Leave it all as it is and disregard any rules, regulations, guidance, paper work etc.. as stipulated in BS7671. just wire it how you feel fit!! :|

ok ok ok

I have seen that I have raised quite a few concerns on here

I`ll finally put a few things straight.

The sparky works for a registered company, and is registered himself. The qual I was on about is for him to certify work and check it off, but he IS a fully qualified sparky ( just had a bad day on my house :( )

I know that when I played with it, I was using the incorrect colours, I was just experimenting to see if it `could` work, hence the questions here. The whole system is on a 10way MCB, ( 1 80RCD+6mcbs & 1 63RCD ) with a 100 (I think) amp DP main switch.

Yes, I was looking for a `cheap job`, as we are on a tight budget to renovate the house, along with paying its mortgage and also 2 rented accomodations & a wedding+honney moon to pay for this year too. ( most expensive year in my life! )

We did call 2 companies to give us a quote. one never turned up, the other never got the quote to me. The later of these is the one that `my` sparky works for.

It was chosen like this this not to do it the ` cowboy way` but the sparky did good work on my dads house in good time. As I said, I dont wanna put him down, but I just think he had ( unfortuantly for me ) a bad job at mine.

I know - YES - I KNOW lol, that I should not use the earth! it was bugging me ALL day yesterday during work, so I went right round and disconnected it, leaving it with a single feed ( not two circuits ) on both switches, with the downstairs 2 operating the up&down lights, and the upstairs 2 operating the uplight & the bathroom ( bathroom on the seperate up lights circuit )

I did it quickly, so I know that the wires are maybe not the correct colours now, as it was getting dark with no lights on - I will revist this on Friday afternoon. I made notes before I changed ANYTHING that he did, so I can put it back exaclty as he put it. We will be getting it all checked, and a certificate for sure, but `if` it fails the check ( for whatever reason), I will know that I have put it back EXACTLY as the sprky left it, so he will have to sort it at his cost, but thats something we`ll sort `IF` it fails.

I just wanted my own peice of mind that wether the set up `could` or `could not` be done with the existing cables, I know I asked for that, and I wanted to be sure if the sparky had a bad 1st day putting cables in, or a bad 2nd day when he fixed the switches on. Either way, I`m annoyed that its worng ( not faulty ), but the problem is not that, as it `could be put right`, but as I said, we are planning to move in in about 2 weeks, and the house is now FULLY decorated, bar the kitchen & hall floor and painting the hallway. To late to make any changes now - We have been working on the house since November 1st, and its been a long journey, lots of money and longer than expected to get it finished, now that the end is finally in sight, I dont want to rip out cables to put new ones in now - tho if I could, I would cos that it not working bugs me! lol

The options I have, I know:

new cables, - no chance :(

remote - possible, depend it we can find one that looks & suit our needs. The one from `GET` not quite the look or function. Picky maybe, I know, but it gotta look right ( ask the missus:p )

Scrap it ? will almost. I know that I can wire it to have 1+1(bathroom) up, 2 down as I described above - thats how the sparky left it. Not exacly how i want, but its 3/4 there lol.

As for leaving it and disregard regualtions : not at all, I do play, and experiment to learn, but I will ALWAYS check if I`m not sure ( again, hence questions). I KNOW that I should not use the earth, I was just asking `Could I use it if I protected it`, OK OK lol, I got a few resounding `NO`s, is exaclty what I expected, but I was curious to see if there was a work around - apparently not.

The same night i did that work on the house, it bugged me - thats when I found this forum. Whether I posted here or not, I would of put it back anyway.

Thanks all

no more problems from me.

Simon

Good morning Simion, you appear to have made quite a splash with your first post, nothing like diving in head first. Probably the big things concerning the guys here about you trying your wiring options are; Using an earth wire and doing the change before asking is it safe. Working out the feasibility could have been done with a pen and paper rather than messing around with live circuits. I don't think anyone wants to encourage hazardous or dangerous working methods, especially on a public forum, such as this one. But on that point I will just say Welcome to the forum and I do hope you get your house all sorted and your wedding later in the year goes well.

Doc H.
