Jam jars have a pretty good seal round the lid anyway. There is quite a strong vacuum in them when you buy them [with the jam  in them] Could you nto just use an ordinary nylon compression gland but seal inside the gland before you assemble it and do the nut up and around the gland too with polyurethane adhesive sealant?? Oh, and around the lid before you screw it back on. Or "tigerseal" or something.. There are loads of different ones, but they would all stick two battleships together..

I think I'd use Sikaflex,,, but then again I do have half a tube in the he garage....f'in expensive though (approx £17/330ml)

and probably all overkill, jammy jars have a seal and a decently done up gland should be water proof anyway. Build one try it, and IF there is a problem start applying large quantities of fancy silicone :^O

Yes, i think that might be the best, might all be worrying about nothing and creating problems where there are none..
