Customer is having an extension in the New year and the architect has told them to have CU and cutout moved about 8-10 metres away so that new position will be at the front of the property on the newly built part.

Customer is due a baby christmas and so wants minimal disruption to the household.

Any suggestions on best method for supplying existing circuits?

Ideas I have at the moment

option 1

Crimp and use some sort of large adpatable box to enclose connections and extend to newly installed consumer unit at front of house

Option 2

Split tails at new cutoout location Install 60amp switchfuse/ rcd protection at cutout to protect tails and run to existing consumer unit location. BTW this is an old wylex rewirable fuse box which will be changed and is located in the meter box.

Option 3

As option 2 but use SWA so negating the need for rcd protection

Option two will be a no as you can't have one RCD for whole installation so option 3 is better. Why do people have building work done when they are pregnant?

Yes I agree, thanks Batty ...dont think one rcd for existing ccts would be a good idea! headbang

I havent worked out cable size yet and wont do that until I put in an estimate, but thinking that If I use SWA then best route would be buried in under concrete pad as dont relish the idea of drilling large holes through the joists (2 storey extension).

Oh the extension is because of the new baby thats on the way and they dont have enough living space or bedrooms.

Have they actually got a cost from DNO for moving the cutout yet, could prove very costly?

Doc H.

No they havent as of yet. However I did mention to them it might be expensive thats why i asked o here the other day if anybody had a rough ball in the park type figure of what it might be.

It will probably be more than I'll charge in labour for wiring up the whole extension!

If baby is due at xmas a builder is going to have to go some to get a two storey extension up by then just over a month away and you may have bad weather before then. Does it really need moving or is it the architect liking to spend customers money.

No, the baby is due xmas, the extension is starting in the new year.

Not sure about the architect, suppose most of them want everything completing to an ideal standard then leave their customer to find out about the costs afterwards.

I would hold back spending too much time calculating costs & materials for moving CU to a new position, just in case it turns out that customer decides its not worth the extra expense to move the cut out & meter.

Doc H.

I might try and talk them out of it as the present position will end up in the new hallway so really its only going to benefit the meter readers and I dont think thats worth paying loads out for.
