Right just got off the phone with the client and she say's that EDF have said that due to the run from the main road supply they would need a small build supply which goes up to 20 metres from the main road cable, the distance is 19.5, So to go into the property it would be double the price, that is why they are terminating it at the boundary, now you would think that they would charge you an extra bit to put it into the house if the trench is prepared for them and a safer install too !!

So That's the reason for the anderson shelter cupboard.

Attached are some local jobs that have the same setup, original house with the concreteshelter arrangement in garden feeding the other 3 new builds in the rear garden.

Maybe whomever approached them didn't make it clear that the new building didn't need a temp supply and the install would be into the final building?

So its a matter of the cost of building enclosure + Your switch fuse, sub main and trenching as well as inconveniance of Meter down the drive VERSES EDF extra cost to bring it all the way up to dwelling.

Be interested to see how that pans out

There is a similar job in my area and they have gone for the same setup, it looks awful, maybe it is so costly from EDF that the inconvenience is worth it,

Sorry but I cant see the problem with running it to an outside meter box at the house.

If the builder digs the trench, installs the duct, hockey stick and meter box then all they have to do is pull through the cable, fit the head and joint it at the road.

If they didn't want to pull it through then they could even give you the cable to do it yourself and then they would only need to do the ends..

im with noz and others on this one, because id say having an anderson type shelter, at the end of drive is asking for trouble in my opninion, i certainly wouldnt be happy happpy having the head and cutout etc setup like that permanantely, tell the lazy bar stweard EDF EON OR WHICH EVER OTHER COMPANY OWNS THE SUPPLY TO PULL THEIR FAT FINGERS OUT THEIR BACKSIDES AND DO THE JOB TO A SAFER AND MORE SATISFACTORY STANDARD AND STOP BEING LAZY CHEAPSKATE COWBOYS!!! rant over!!!!!! bad day explodebad day explodebad day explodebad day explode

I would contact them again, make it CLEAR the trench within the property will be prepared for them as well as a duct to get the cable into the house, so the only extra expense is at tops half an hour extra to lay the extra cable (and that's being generous) and an extra few metres of cable.

See what their revised price comes back at.

Also make it clear you will bury and tape the cable within your property.

Personally I would pay them more to avoid that carbuncle on the edge of the property.

ive decided to put supply for the christmas lights into a tree, i think ill run flex to it buried in a bit of waste piping and stick into the main switch save the cost of rcds mcbs, and the armoured cable too! oh and not to bother with any glands regs say i dont need them :^O :^O bad day explode

SUPPLY COMPANY NEEDS :red card :red card

It's too hot to shout Badger!

This setup I have found locally is the same as what they have requested, I think it's a liabilty and ugly but have been through it with the client, it's just asking for trouble in the future, anyway some pics of this similar one I have found.

First picture is the plan given by EDF for the bunker.

On the right is an alleyway how on earth do planning let people put 4 houses in their gardens with a crappy bunker on the corner !!

Still if that is what they want I will do it and take the money but will talk to her again to try and get it changed.

I've never seen anything like that before, looks awful in front of your house. I've know places that have a detached garage closer to the road than the actual house, so the meter has been installed there, but never seen those bunkers before.

Interesting idea but very very ugly , 1 think I have noticed is ANYONE can just open the doors on that bunker I see no kind of lock on it ?

i have worked a installation where the service fuse protected 20 odd meters of armoured to the flats.

I have also worked on pavillions with a similar set up, head 100 odd meters from the installation which i believe to be a common setup.

Could it be the owner was given two prices one for supply into the house and one to just inside the boundary, given the price the DNO charge went for the cheaper option and let the electrician sort out the rest?

Im sure small developers and builders would jump at this cheaper option given how tight they can be and not worry about a small brick structure!

TBH I have only seen one of those once before and that was on a new build, after the house was built and I'd first and second fixed it the head and meter were relocated into a meter box on the outside of the house and the brick enclosure knocked down...

Which is as I described many posts back now, a temporary building supply with the supply moved into the dwelling when completed, and quite normal practice.

In that case the temporary meter cupboard need only have been timber, as long as it was watertight (felted roof), but I guess with brickies on site it costs next to nothing to build a little brick enclosure.

Another stipulation up here was the temporary meter cupboard should be lockable, which covers another concern raised, though in practice I never did lock ours, but we are out in the sticks with no passers-by.
