Hi

I have just got an LED security light deleivered that i got from eBay.

The wiring coming from the light is RED, BLACK and YELLOW instead of the usual UK wiring.

Any idea on what goes where? The instruction manual is useless as that refers to Blue, Brown and Green wires.

I am going to connect it to a standard plug. Please advise on this.

thanks.

has it got a CE mark? it may not be safe to use.

The old colours were red(brown) -Live | black (blue) Neutral | and green/yellow for the earth.

but without testing it who knows?

seeing as the colours aren't right I would start to wonder what else isn't right.

send it back for a refund IMO

Any electrician would know exactly what they are but as BD says are you sure what you have is safe?

Irrespective of what colours are or are not there, most reputable quality products do also have markings by the terminals such as 'L' 'N' 'E'.  are you sure it is a mains voltage fitting? As you say security light do you mean it has a built in sensor. Can it operate any slave lamps off the same fitting? If so one wire may be a switched live out 'S/L'. The fitting may be double insulated not requiring an earth connection. Is there a small logo with two squares one inside the other?

I would suggest you contact the seller for the installation instructions ...... and if they are not forthcoming then I would suggest you request you send it back for a refund.

Wired it up yellow to earth, red to brown and black to blue in a cable connector.. works fine.. thanks..

Its does have a CE mark on also

The wiring colours are a European standard, IEC 60446. CE stands Conformité Européene therefore on the face of it does not comply.

in this case CE must stand for Chinese Export.

thing is, he now has it working, so assumes it must be safe (even though he clearly hasnt took in what anyone has said). but now that it works, i doubt he will be back...

Exactly what makes me concerned about advising DIY enthusiasts over the web. Legal - well grey. Ethical - hell no.

Now EN 60445 actually, if you consider it part of a man machine interface.

Then there is EN 60598-1 general safety requirements for luminaires.

The luminaire as described here does not comply with EN60598 which is one of the harmonised standards under the low-voltage directive.

Hi.. i will be back and thanks for all your advice.. the item is on ebay if you search for item number 371229008322

It doesnt have a PIR unit as it will be manually operated. I have connected it to a plug like old colour wires would go
Red - L

Black - N

Yellow - E

It states on the item on ebay it does not come with UK wiring or a UK Plug,

The model is made by Shenzhen model number GZSJ-TG-4

Complies to CE and RoHS (according to the manufacturers website)

Perhaps then they can get around some of the clauses with their eBay listing, however BS EN 60598-1 is specific in its insistence that instructions are provided if no plug is fitted.

If I could read the standards numbers & actually see the higher resolution images of the certs I would check a few other things.

Well on this at the moment, just done a weeks PUWER98 assessments on workshop machinery, for a large public sector organisation & I have another Tuesday, for a global aerospace company a bespoke lifting machine!

There are some instuctions but was unsure as UK wire colours are different.
I took off the back and the yellow wire is bolted to the unit inside. The red wire is soldered to a + sign and the black to a - sign going into a sealed box in the back of the unit.

I guess it will trip the sockets if there is a fault?

House was fully rewired 2 years ago, main trip board has loads of switches for upstairs sockets, downstairs sockets, etc..
Im not an electrician I came on her to ask about the wiring on the light not to get a grilling over what I do and what i dont do with my electrics.

I will add an RCD to the plug socket its put into just to be sure.
