Its an awkward one, should they be fined for poor performance or not...

If they are fined, there is less money in the pot and potentially the service gets worse

If they aren't, then as a private company they see they have got away with it, and can cut back, perform worse next year and make a bigger profit for the directors and shareholders...

Should have never been privatised to start with!

But you can't fine your best mates as they won't be buying you a helicopter for Christmas.

I guess no one on here usese trains much... Some of the rolling stock on the lines round here is 30/40 years old. how many times do you think they have payed for themselves?

been on the train to London and back this weekend, every time I get on a train the seats seem to even closer together than the previous time, to the point that where as I used to like a train journey for the comfort, now I find it a bit tedious and uncomfortable. Still it gave me plenty of time to interrogate my new phone, and work out how most of it works LOL

The issue is WHY is the train late?

If it's late because the operator is sloppy - fine them.

If it's late because the network is full / broken / not working, then it would be daft to fine them. Fine the network operator instead.

And all fines raised should be spent improving the railway.

But hang on by that token all speeding fines should be spent improving the roads then.   :coat

I don't travel by train often, but last time I did (Inverness to Newcastle, east coast) My ticket gave me a seat number. Trouble was there was someone else also with a ticket with the same seat number. the guard was not interested, just told me to sit in any empty seat.  Imagine that happening on an airline, two of you with a ticket for the same seat. Why should it be so hard on a train?

So isn't the answer to fine when poor performance, hold the money earn the interest and return the money as performance improved?

Too simple?
Thats far too simple Sharpie and would probably work a treat as they could work towards reclaiming their hard earned money as service improves.

Who do you think you are ........ me?

Do we need the HS2  ?    Who wants to get to London 10mins faster than you did before ?  Just get an earlier train .  Or don't go at all,

Who are all these people who need to be rocketing down the country to London every day ?

I propose overthrowing the "Just - in - Time"  system where everyone needs their stuff yesterday ...and back to place your order in good time ...it goes into a container at Dover say.......  container goes on a massively long train , like those US ones,  and the containers move up the counrty getting taken off at the appropriate places for the final trip by road.           Great reduction in trucks off the road.

Crikey we are more alike than I thought!!! :)

I reckon we should just go back to all having a horse and cart. Would suit me just fine, although work would be fined enormous amounts for leaving customers off supply for more than 16 hours, as getting to the far end of my depot's patch might take a day or so :D
